Default XP Box Cannot See 7 Box Share?

I tried this in microsoft.public.windowsxp.general, but no luck.
----------------------------------------------------------------

On my Win 7 laptop, I designated D: to be shared.

The "Guest" ID is enabled.

The other ID has had it's password removed.

Under Control Panel | Network Sharing Center | Advanced sharing options
Home or Work has the following options set:
File and Printer Sharing = Turn on file and printer sharing
Public folder sharing = Turn on sharing so anyone with network
access can read and write files in the Public folders
Media Streaming = Media streaming is off
File sharing connections = Use 128-bit encryption...
Password protected sharing = Turn off password protected sharing
HomeGroup connections = Use user accounts and passwords to connect
to other computers

Public (current profile) has the same settings where the parms exist

When I to open that share from my XP box going through My Network
Places, it sees the share, but throws
"\\Vaio\D is not accessible. You might not have permission to use
this network resource...." "Access is denied"

When I try to get to it by mapping a network drive to "\\VAIO\D", XP
still isn't having any of it. I've tried just clicking "Finish" and
I've tried "Connect using a different user name".

I must be doing something dumb....

But what?

Googling, I see something about 120 vs 40-bit encryption in the
authentication, but it seems like XP should deal with 128 and I'm afraid
to just go klutzing around with stuff I don't know anything about.

Default XP Box Cannot See 7 Box Share?

Per (PeteCresswell):

FWIW, when I go at it from the XP box's "My Network Places", the Win 7
laptop shows up and the share I have defined shows up - although it's
inaccessible with the errors stated.

But other things show up too:

- Printers and Faxes
- My LAN-based printer
- Something called "Users"...

When I drill down into "Users", there is a "Public" entry where various
directories are accessible. e.g.: \\Vaio\Users\Public\Downloads

I can copy a text file from the XP box to "Downloads"... and when I go
the Laptop and drill down through C:\Users\Public\Public Downloads,
the copied file is there.

But wait.... it gets better!

If I go to the laptop and drag/drop a link from the D: drive to
C:\Users\Public\Public Downloads:

- I can see the link from the XP box

- Clicking on the link from My Network Places\Vaio (the laptop's name)
\Users\Public\Downloads\Data(D) - Shortcut, takes me right in to
the D: drive, just as I've been trying to do via mapping to
the share.

So... problem solved.... sort of....

But still begs the question of what I'm doing to mess up the ability to
get to it by drive-mapping the share from the XP box.

Usual route.

Ensure each machine has a user profile with same logon username and same password on both machines.
Share applicable folder(s) on each machine (not entire drive). If necessary share printer and media on each. (Public folder in
userprofile is automatically shared)
Configure each machine with same Workgroup name (do not use Homegroup in Win7, it is only applicable for Win7 and Win8 machines not
XP)
Ensure Folder options on Win7 is using Sharing Wizard and XP is using same or Simple File Sharing
On Win7 ensure Network Discovery is on
If network is wifi configure the router to use WPA2 and AES with a 63 character passphrase (the strong passphrase is to avoid
others from hacking your network)
