I've just tried this free prog and it creates a bootable image from the C:\esd\windows folder.
I chose Win7 as the os.
The image it creates boots OK.
Also the resulting iso image will do a clean install as well as an upgrade.

Thanks for this link

I upgraded 2 computer this morning

XP - win 8 pro

Vista - win 8 pro

With the Vista upgrade I was given a choice of creating an ISO file but
not when upgrading windows XP

Both there are new computers with no operating systems
I used my unused Vista and XP copies to and then upgraded.

The iso file allows me to create win 8 pro DVD that I can use to do
a fresh installation. What a fantastic deal for 40 dollars plus tax.

One thing I found was that the iso from the download is not exactly like a 'normal' Windows dvd.
If you boot the iso and choose to 'Repair your computer' the image recovery option does not work.
You get a message saying the operation is unable to proceed or something and that you should boot
from a repair disk.
So make sure you create a system repair disk for any future problems.

For my quirky reason I had removed the small boot partition and therefore cannot create a
repair disk. However I will keep the Windows 8 Enterprise 90 evalulation DVD for keeps
as it has all the necessary files to do the repair.

The repair disk I'm talking about is made via Control Panel.
Select to view by: Large icons Windows 7 File Recovery Create a system repair disc.

A repair can only be done on the same version of the installed o/s.
