Default MS Office box copy?

I just updated my HP Pavilion to Windows 8.1 and like it very much. I
would like to update my MS Office Home and Business to the latest
version but I want a box copy. I can't find a box copy in any local
stores. Is MS Office available only on those download cards with the
code number on it? If I buy one of these, then for some reason, later,
have to reinstall MS Office can I use the card again? For how long?

Thanks, Gordon

Trial it before you buy it. A 60 day trial is available.
Based on the low review numbers, I'd trial it.

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/buy/

If you don't like the new interfaces, you've then saved
yourself some money.

There is a subscription version, as well as a
traditional version (well, not really that
traditional).

Newegg shows a "Key card" purchase, so there is no media.
Read the customer reviews, before you touch it with a
barge pole.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832416593

Pick a more expensive version, receive more good news.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832416580

"It requires you to link the product key that you get
in this package to a Windows Live account. It can then
never be transferred to another Windows Live account. Think
about that very hard if you are a building a system for others.

Since they are pushing their cloud thing, now to open a file
takes more clicks. It's not just a File Open anymore. It's
a File Open On My Computer. They've done a lot of little
things like that which just add complexity to what you used
to do very simply."

That one is apparently booby-trapped like Win8.1, in that
if you don't do your research, you end up tying it to the
Live Account. Another user reports:

"Other Thoughts: Search: "Office 2013 Direct Download Links"
You will find a .net with links direct from MSFT for all the
different versions. Burn a disc, and you can install on
multiple machines without downloading, also you can do a
'standard' machine-based activation instead of a Live
acct-based activation."

I can see some Direct Download links here. The downloads
are from DigitalRiver, the same place we were getting the
Windows 7 SP1 official DVD images. When you do downloads
like that, use MD5SUM, SHA1SUM, or even the Microsoft FCIV
utility, compute a checksum, Google it, and verify the
checksum is a "well known and trusted value". Don't accept
links that download from a site other than DigitalRiver.
The only reason those links are on DigitalRiver, is
for DigitalRiver customers (DR is an electronic software
seller - I used to buy small applications there years
ago - it was in the same league as Kagi).

If you can get the DigitalRiver ISO, before you
buy a key, that might be as close as you get to
a "box" version. At least you can burn your own DVD.
Using the ISO, might even allow you to dodge the Live
account requirement (no docs on Skydrive).

Have fun (maybe),
Paul

The latest version is Office 2013. At the link above, or searching
Amazon.com by myself, all I see for Office 2013 are downloads.

Save yourself some money, use:

LibreOffice: https://www.libreoffice.org/

OpenOffice: https://www.openoffice.org/

or any other free office Suite:

They all do the same as Ms-Office and the are free.

There are other established mainstream Office Suits available.

While I do not use it IBM Lotus Symphony is still available, free, and
being maintained

http://ibm-lotus-symphony.en.softonic.com/

Personally I use Corel WordPerfect suite with wordprocessor,
spreadsheet, and a presentation.

It is significantly less than MS Word and if you watch you can get great
deals on the Student/Home edition which can be installed on up to 3
computers. If you watch you can get the full version for about $150,
depending on the deal you find.

They don't even all do the same things as each other.

Similar? Yes. But exactly the same, no.

Some of them are very good and will meet many people's needs. But none
of them are completely compatible with Microsoft Office, and will not
meet everyone's needs.

For most people, they are worth trying and may save them some money if
they meet your needs. But nobody should start out with the assumption
that it will definitely meet his needs and save him any money.

And by the way, while we are recommending things, I personally
recommend Corel WordPerfect over Microsoft Word, LibreOffice,
FreeOffice, or any other word processor I've ever seen. I'm not a fan
of the other programs in the WordPerfect Office suite, but I think
it's the best word processor out there--much better than Microsoft
Word, OpenOffice, LibreOffice, etc.. It's not free, but it's not very
expensive. Here's an excellent price ($58.99 US) for X6, the latest
version:

Excellent comments Paul. I dumped MS Office a couple of years ago and
switched to

SoftMaker Office 2012.
Compatible with Microsoft Office 2010, 2007, 2003, and more.

I forgot the page with the ISO9660 installer files for MS Office.
These are likely all links to DigitalRiver. You can make your
installer DVD from one of these.

I saw a similar picture on Newegg, and one of those
purchases is a "Key card". No media in either
case. You have to download your own media.
And like Windows 7, you can get it off the Internet,
from DigitalRiver.

Retail versions do not included disc media.
Download option and product key.

The downloaded file can be used to reinstall Office.
- the license only provides for use on one pc
- installing on a different pc will nullify the license on the other
pc and after a short period of time deactivate as non-genuine.
- installing the second time (as opposed to restoring an image of the
o/s and software drive/partition) may require a phone call (to
Microsoft) to activate the software.

For those curious about upgrade pricing and media.
From MSFT Office Chat
"Unfortunately there is no upgrade versions of Office only the full
versions"

Having 30+ machines here, I can't justify having 30+ licenses of MS
Office. So some has MS Office, Libre Office, Open Office, Star Office,
and two has Kingsoft Office Suite Professional. Funny nobody here except
me seems to talk about Kingsoft. As Kingsoft I find much nicer than
Libre or Open Office. I think the Professional version is like $69. And
the Standard version is free for personal use.

Wow! You like Libre Office and Open Office? I have over 30 machines here
and I can't afford 30+ copies of MS Office. So I have Libre Office or
Open Office on some of them. But I find them very weak myself. They
probably should have been called Libre Works and Open Works.
