What the ...
Trying to set up my GMail account in Thunderbird but GMail will not let me in without providing a phone number for ... "verification". No thanks! Other GMail accounts I have set up do without this. I do not have a pay phone handy and I think that incoming calls to a pay phone are now blocked. I doubt this is in any way related to Thunderbird, just the big 'G' trying to get more info they can exploit no matter what they say. And number blocking DOES NOT WORK all the time especially since they can use hundreds of numbers to call from. Is there a way to get a temporary phone number? Can anything be done? |

Ironic, I just did one yesterday and had the same issue. I did however give my land line phone #. That I don't mind as if I don't know the incoming caller I just ignore it, or block it if they call often. Of course you point of changing #s doesn't help with blocking. I can't come up with any other idea. I entered another email address, I'm not sure why they didn't allow using that address to send the code. Maybe I didn't look hard enough. Now that I say it, the "phone #" button did look like a drill down, maybe there IS another option?. |

Trying to set up my GMail account in Thunderbird but GMail will not let me in without providing a phone number for ... "verification". I haven't set up a new account lately, but I have always been able to refuse gmail's request for a 'backup' contact by giving it another non-gmail email address. What gmail strongly WANTS to do is have a CELL phone number, not a non-text-capable number. Gmail has an automated system that a friend of mine has had to use multiple times when he can't get into gmail. When that problem develops, gmail's automated system springs into action, no humans involved, and texts him a pass that lets him get in and then fix his pass. To gmail's credit, it works great. However, for various reasons that have to do with what I DON'T do with cell phones, I have always refused gmail's auto-beseeching me to give a mobile number. Gmail's lost pass problem automation can also work with the alternate email address. It can NOT work with a landline telno. I suppose that the alternate email address could also be another gmail address, I don't know if there is any restriction on that part. -- Mike Easter |

From the gmail help: gmail allows 3 different choices for what they refer to as 'account recovery' options. - alternate email (no restriction against it being another gmail) - recovery phone (it doesn't give a restriction requiring mobile/text) - secret question I don't know how they automate the secret question or the landline options, but it is likely they can do that. I think the OP is saying the Google is asking for the phone to send the authorization code. He's trying to make the gmail address, not add it to TB. |

Having just setup a gmail account, I remember gmail asking for another phone to send a code to. Not TB. So I guess I just read between the lines too much. I can't see TB asking for phone #. The OP could have mistyped his quesiton/info. |
