I have old CDs that I want to back up on my NAS by creating a .ISO file
from the CD to then copy to the NAS.
What is the best app to create the .ISO.

Google is the best search engine for these things.

ImgBurn is good for general media ripping.

You may find things like ExactCDCopy referenced
for audio CDs, and that's a slightly different
topic (dunno why though).

And not all CDs are created equal. Some have anti-copying
features in how the media is coded (things you can do in
pressed media, that might not be easy to do in burned media).
Then you need something just a bit better than ImgBurn.

Some of the terminology is here.

https://club.myce.com/t/sheep-test-guide/91212

And this one mentions CloneCD.

https://club.myce.com/t/one-sheep-tw...chops/112306/5

But if these are CDs you burned from downloaded ISOs, then
threw away the ISO files, and now want to make ISO files
again, then ImgBurn will do for that.

True pirate-like projects (wanting to "backup" game CDs),
that's when the sheep come in. And some media is so well protected,
it puts a rootkit on your PC when you place the media in the
optical drive.

+1
But take care when you install it. IIRC, you get offered several
unwanted 'extras'.

This is the version I use. This is the release from
just before the Adware/OpenCandy or whatever was added.
The package goes from about 2MB to 5MB, when it has
"extra crap" on board.

http://www.oldversion.com/windows/do...mgburn-2-5-0-0

2.5.0.0_SetupImgBurn_2.5.0.0.exe 2,169,915 bytes Jul 26, 2009
CRC32: 39CD6FC6

SHA-1: E07BCC23B495D0A966BAE359EA9E0E3A11888454

When running the program, reject attempts by the program to
call home and update itself. There's a dialog, click cancel.

Interesting.

I think mine came via the official Imgburn website.
http://www.imgburn.com/

I've just checked, and I see that my AV (ESET) immediately comes up with
an "Address has been blocked" message.

However, the 'Download' tab (immediately to the right of 'News')
provides seven sources to download the latest version from. [Current
version: 2.5.8.0 Released: 16th June 2013]

The MajorGeeks download is 3MB.

The ImgBurn download is 3.8MB - and after I've saved it, ESET warns
"Potentially unwanted application found" (and offers a 'Clean' or
'Ignore').

I haven't tested the other download sites, but I'm sure that, if you
want latest version, MajorGeeks will be OK. They normally provide
exactly you ask for. [My version IS 2.5.8.0, so it's probably where I
got it.]

With quite a lot of freeware these days, you're normally OK if you make
sure you select 'Custom' install. This then gives you the options (one
by one) of NOT installing the 'extras'. If you select 'Standard' or
'Typical' (or whatever), you get the lot whether you want them or not.
