Default How to edit Android screen recording to remove WiFi MAC address & SSID?

What freeware do you use to edit an Android MP4 screen recording on Windows
10 in order to remove the WiFi MAC addresses & SSIDs?

Using RecMe freeware on Android 4.3, I recorded the WiFi signal strength
moving graph real-time progression from multiple access points over a
six-minute period of time using Fritz! freeware on Android.

This created an MP4 file, but as shown in this screenshot, I need to blank
out the details of the SSIDs and MAC addresses in the MP4 A/V recording.
http://i64.tinypic.com/27xi5hf.jpg

Using FTP Server (Free) on Android to enable FileZilla freeware on Windows
10 to download the resulting file stored by default on Android in
"/storage/emulated/0/recordings/filename.mp4" the file is now sitting on
Windows 10.

What Windows 10 freeware will easily blank out the details of the SSIDs &
MAC addresses of an Android MP4 screen recording of this screen format?

Search terms:

"blur face in video android"

"fastest way to redact video"

I could do the whole job using FFMPEG and netpbm suite
(if the area to be blurred is static), but I don't think
anyone wants to hear about it :-) Just search until you
find a modern method.

If a movie editor didn't have such a blur function, you
could do Picture In Picture (PIP), and lay a "blank movie" on
top of the original movie. Then render out.

Googling is *almost never* the best way to find the best freeware.

Googling is only useful when *every* review says the same thing.
Which almost never happens. Hence Google is one of the *worst* ways to find
the best free software. At least Google alone is.

The cost of freeware is in the extensive *testing* that is required to find
the best ones.

*Testing* each one without an advertising goal is the best way, but that's
expensive in terms of time (but is often needed because most people don't
understand such questions).

However, the best method overall is *finding someone* who isn't trying to
sell something who knows the answer because *they* have tested the software
for the specified task.

Sort of like if you asked me which is the better free FTP program, I'd know
that FileZilla kicks WinSCPs butt. That isn't going to happen in most
advertising-supported reviews of software that you find on Google.

Or, more to the point, if you asked me which is the best arrowing freeware,
bar none (since I've tried them all), and that's Paint.NET (despite the
need for .NET which sucks). If you asked the fastest cropping program, I'd
tell you it's Irfanview. If you asked the best face smudger, I'd say it's
Vicman photo editor (if you can still find an old version).

An then there are always the inevitable freeware gotchas, e.g., watermarks,
size limitations, time limitations, registration issues, privacy issues,
etc., that only someone who isn't being paid (somehow) to make a review
will mention honestly.

Almost none of that would *ever* be found by a billion years of googling.

I'm seeking the canonical Windows 10 freeware video editor of MP4 files
that can blank out areas of the video, where the MP4 file simply originated
on Android which is mentioned because of the file format sometimes matters.

If the suggestion is to "just google", I have to point out that googling
almost never gets you the best common tool simply because the output from
Google is highly polluted.

Since the cost of freeware is the effort it requires to test each one to
find the best, what is needed is not yet another commercial review, all of
which suffer from temporal, advertising, and test bias.

What is needed is someone with experience video editing to answer the
question who isn't trying to sell something.

For example, these guys are all trying to sell something:

And the list goes on and on.

While Googling is *almost never* the best way to find the best freeware,
what Google sometimes does, in the absence of any experts in the field, is
let you know which top five or ten free programs to *test*.

But *testing* I can always do, and I do test *many* freeware programs,
where I know the best free photo editors for certain things, the best audio
editors for certain things, the best Usenet client for certain things, the
best IMG extactor, the best encryption container, the best video converter,
the best codec pack, etc.

All I'm asking here is for someone who has done the testing, what they feel
the best free Windows 10 video editor is for cropping out information.

I've found the best freeware a billion times, where I know Googling is
almost never the best approach. The best approach is to find someone who
has done the tests who isn't trying to sell you something. The only other
reliable approach is to be that person yourself.

Those are the only two viable options.
I'm asking here for the first.

Has anyone on this ng used a freeware video editor to crop areas out?
What did you use and do you recommend it?

Thanks for that suggestion of VirtualDub because if you've done the task,
then that drops out dozens of failed freeware tests right off the bat!

Freeware isn't free.
The cost of freeware is knowledge.
The knowledge is gained at the expense of time & effort.

So I appreciate that you put in time and effort in the past, with
VirtualDub freeware, so I will check that out when I get home later today.

Googling for the canonical location, I find this:
http://virtualdub.org/
https://sourceforge.net/projects/virtualdub/

With freeware, first inspections of the web pages are extremely telling,
where Virtual Dub passes the quick inspection - so that's good to start.

and FileZilla no way kicks WinSCPs butt.

I've used *all* the free FTP servers on Android and *many* of the free FTP
clients on Windows. In fact, WinSCP used to be my favorite FTP client on
Windows, after I gave up with just using the native Windows File Explorer
using the URL style below (from memory):

Here is a picture of my extremely well organized Windows start menu:
http://i64.tinypic.com/2qardz5.jpg

Notice that I only use freeware, and I only use the absolute *best*
freeware, and that I myself have chosen as the best just two programs:
1. FileZilla
2. WinSCP

It turns out after testing FTP clients for about three years (ever since my
microUSB port broke on my Android phone), that WinSCP and FileZilla are the
best - but I like FileZilla far better than I liked WinSCP.

If this thread were about FTP clients, I would delve deeper into the whys
with you; but I don't want to hijack my own thread since what I'm seeking
is the answer to a quick redaction question.

I ask only for suggestions from those who have performed the task
themselves.

If VirtualDub is the way to go, that's what I'll test.

Another crap question from Roy Tremblay aka Lionel Muller aka Blake
Snyder and now Harry Newton.

I hope somebody is updating their database to keep track of this pedo
who likes to hide his identity. Authorities are watching him and AIOE
chap is being paid to keep the record of all IP addresses used by this
person. I am keeping a record no doubt using my decrypter tool.

I use VirtualDub, With the plugins it does pretty much anything I've
ever required. Note - not always the most intuitive to use but you can
always find a page on google that will guide you doing something you
don't know how.

What's interesting, which often happens with Freeware, is not only that the
suggested app doesn't even show up on the first two pages of Google hits
for the best freeware for the task, but that someone else (Pooh the Cat)
suggested VirtualDub, but Mayayana kindly tested it and it wouldn't even
open his MP4 file!

Of course, if it's just that VirtualDub can't handle MP4 files then that
can be fixed with the older versions of Super freeware (before they went to
the dark side) or the newer versions of Handbrake freeware on Windows, but
video-format conversions are almost never pretty affairs.

Looking at the VirtualDub web site for clues about handling MP4 files
http://virtualdub.org/
https://sourceforge.net/projects/virtualdub/

The first reference says outright "VirtualDub is mainly geared toward
processing AVI files", so, Mayayana's observations that VirtualDob didn't
handle MP4 files from Android screen recorders seem to be on the mark.

The good news is that this first reference does mention that it can "blur"
video, but it doesn't say whether it can do that within a selection area.
http://virtualdub.org/features.html

The second reference implies VirtualDub is mostly for "capture" and not so
much for editing of video but then it references the first site for more
information.

As we all know, the cost of freeware is finding the right one for the job.
The *easiest* and *best* way to find the right freeware for the job is to
find someone (usually an expert but not always) who has done the job with
freeware or with Payware (Payware is great to learn "how" it's done and
that it "can" be done).

From my cursory due diligence on VirtualDub, with conversion of MP4 to AVI,
VirtualDub might be able to "blur" selected areas of the screen - but, from
experience, I find conversion to have its own set of problems with almost
no gain so it would be best if we can solve the original question of:

Q: Has anyone on this ng ever "blurred out" selected sections of an MP4
using Windows Freeware (if so, what do you recommend)?

In the Win7 group someone just recommended
VirtualDUB. I downloaded it. First it wouldn't open
mp4. So I gave it an AVI. It allowed me to copy
a frame and paste it into Paint Shop Pro, but I
was unable to paste the edited frame back into
the video. That function is not on the menu.

I won't be back till this evening but I will try it out to see if I have
the same dismal results with VirtualDub in "blocking" out areas.

Maybe it's a "technique" thing to block out areas in Windows video
freeware?

This "good guy" is truly psychotic (where he proves the case that privacy
against such people is du rigueur for sheer safety's sake).

He threatens everyone with public exposure, and his threads always include
his own personal pedophilia fetish.

As I said to him before and I say now, please stay away from me and do not
ever contact me nor respond to my threads as you, good guy, are truly a
dangerous person.

I will respond no further to this "Good Guy" in this thread so as to not
knock the thread off topic and to save others the distasteful task of
having to deal with such dangerous psychological misfits.

I'm all for WinSCP, and for the native Windows 10 FTP handling in the
native "Windows File Explorer" but I've found, over the past 3 years that
my Android phone has had a bat microUSB port, that transferring files over
FileZilla is "more reliable" than using either WinSCP or the Windows File
Explorer as the FTP client.

Nonetheless, this question is about freeware on Windows to blur out a face
or block out a street sign in a mobile-phone created MP4 video.

I think we have a potential winner with this suggestion just now...

He who is newshound said on Thu, 28 Sep 2017 19:03:54 +0100:

I'm currently using Shotcut (for simpler things than that) and am pretty
impressed. I *think* I have seen this done on one of their demo videos
where they applied stabilisation to a hand-held "interview" type of
thing, then used cropping to get rid of the blurry edges.

If Shotcut can handle MP4, I think this suggestion moves it to the top!
https://www.shotcut.org/features/

Googling we find more than what was found on the canonical Shotcut site:
https://duckduckgo.com/?q=tutorial+shotcut+blur+face+-filmora

- How to Blur a Video - Shotcut Tutorial
http://gadoga.com/en/how-to-blur-sensor-video-shotcut-tutorial.html

This tutorial shows two ways, a blur, and a text block overlay:
- How to Blur & Obscure Part of an image with Shotcut
https://youtu.be/VErftj1fUHs

This tutorial explains the method a bit deeper:
https://plus.google.com/+JamesWoo/posts/ht9mvmRDs6r
"Shotcut does not have a blur filter per se, but this workaround achieves a
similar result. This is used if you want to blur some text (eg off a number
plate, t-shirt) or someone's face, when you have already recorded a video,
and there's no way of re-shooting the video."

Note that other solutions were found in that search, where, as is often the
case with freeware, multiple best-in-class solutions are cascaded:

I don't know yet if Shotcut can handle MP4, but if it does, it seems pretty
clear that Shotcut is, so far, the best and easiest suggested way to
blur/obscure a selected area in an MP4 video using existent Windows
freeware.

VSDC Free Video Editor (nag splash screen) makes the task relatively
convenient if the confidential data fields don't move much throughout
the video.

- Import background video to timeline
- Use the rectangle tool to draw and color a resizable rectangle big
enough to cover a confidential data field on the video preview.
- Rt-click to duplicate rectangles as needed
- Place the timeline cursor where you want to start cloaking the
confidential data with rectangles
- Place the timeline cursor where you want to stop cloaking the
confidential data with rectangles
- Stretch each timeline rectangle icon between the cursor start/stop
points
- Export movie

You'll need to uncheck the Hardware Acceleration option to export with
the freeware version.

I had dropped this project last week mainly because all the videos assumed
a certain setup, and they quickly mentioned commands that I didn't have
(because Shotcut is extremely variable in what it presents as a GUI to the
user). http://i64.tinypic.com/27xi5hf.jpg

But today I picked it up again and was able to add the redaction overlays
to the entire video. I have since made a more complex video so I need to
figure out how to just add the redaction overlays to a certain time period,
but for now, if anyone wants to follow, these steps should be completely
reproduceable in a few seconds.

Bear in mind the Shotcut GUI doesn't have menu items for everything so some
menu names below are from hovering over the buttons.

This should work for you - but it redacts a selected bounding box on the
entire video (and not just a time segment).
Shotcut: Help About Shotcut 17.09.04 OK
File Open File filename.mp4
View Filters Add a Filter Show Video Filters Text
To show a text box, type any number (e.g., 10,10) into the "Position" fields
Drag the corners with your mouse over the area to be redacted
Click the "Background" box to set the background color to black (or whatever)
Click the "Font" box to set the font color to the same color as the background
File Export Video Export File filename.mp

That will redact that section of the entire video.
Now I just need to figure out how to do that for just a portion of the
video.

OK. I just figured out how to do everything I needed in Shotcut, which
turns out to be a great program, once you get the hang of it.

Most videos, even those on the Shotcut web site, IMHO, suck, in that they
start with a non-standard setup (already customized) and they press buttons
willy nilly without telling you what buttons they are pressing.

This is the *only* video I've found yet that doesn't make those mistakes!
https://youtu.be/sphcVAUWM4Q
Where the video shows how to add text to desired sections at time 430:
https://youtu.be/sphcVAUWM4Q?t=430

It turns out the video above is all you'll need to get Shotcut to add text
overlays to various sections of a video. But I wrote this text tutorial
based off of that video so that people could perform the task even if the
video gets deleted over time.

Please try it out and let us know what works and what doesn't work.
Notice I do two obvious things that few to nobody else seems to think of:
a. I reset the shotcut GUI to the defaults (so we all start the same)
b. I let people know the version that I tested (which can matter)

The goal is to obscure faces or street signs or house addresses
(or whatever) in certain secdtions of a video.

Collect any 3 short test files (2 videos with or without audio & 1 audio):
video1.mkv (the file format is up to you)
video2.mp4 (optional)
audio.mp3 (optional)

Start Shotcut & let people know the tested version:
Help About Shotcut 17.09.04 OK

Reset Shotcut to the default layout for consistency in using this tutorial:
View Restore Default Layout

You will need a timeline so now add the GUI for the timeline at the bottom:
View Timeline

Now it's time to add a "blank" V1 video track to the timeline:
{Leftmost Timeline Hamburger} Add Video Track
(Or just press the "Control + Y" keystroke to add a blank video track.)

Add another blank V2 video track to the timeline:
{Leftmost Timeline Hamburger} Add Video Track

Add a blank A1 audio track to the timeline:
{Leftmost Timeline Hamburger} Add Audio Track
(Or just press the "Control + U" keystroke to add a blank audio track.)

If desired, resize the windows so all blank timeline tracks show up.
Note that Control+Z is the undo keystroke (you'll use this a lot!).

Open the desired first video file and drag it into the V1 timeline:
File Open File filename.mp4
Drag it to the V1 time point you want this first video to start playing.

Open the desired second video file and drag it into the V2 timeline:
File Open File filename.mkv
Drag it to the V2 time point you want this second video to start playing.

Open the desired audio track and drag it into the A1 timeline:
File Open File filename.mp3
Drag it to the A1 time point you want this second video to start playing.

Test your newly assembled video by pressing the PLAY button above the
timeline.
(Get used to the video playing features by clicking about.)

Select a section of the V1 track to cut from the video (leaving zero space)
In the timeline, select the desired video track V1
Place the timeline vertical bar at the beginning of what you want to cut
out
Press the "Split at Playhead (S)" icon in the timeline toolbar
Move the timeline vertical bar to the end of the section you want to cut
out
Press the "Split at Playhead (S)" icon in the timeline toolbar

Once the section is selected, you have three main options for "removal":
Pressing the timeline "minus" icon will "ripple delete" leaving no space
Pressing the timeline "scissor" icon will copy to clipboard & "ripple
delete"
Pressing the timeline "caret" icon will "lift" the section, leaving a
space

Now add text to a selected section of the video as shown in this video:
https://youtu.be/sphcVAUWM4Q?t=430

Define the section of the timeline that you want to add the overlay text:
In the timeline, select the desired video track V1
Place the timeline vertical bar at the beginning of what you want to text
Press the "Split at Playhead (S)" icon in the timeline toolbar
Move the timeline vertical bar to the end of the section you want to text
Press the "Split at Playhead (S)" icon in the timeline toolbar
Then click on that portion of the video to "select" it for operating on

Add a black box over the desired redaction area:
View Filters Add a Filter Show Video Filters Text
NOTE: Add a Filter is the plus symbol.
NOTE: Show Video Filters is the TV symbol.
The default text box will be the entire video screen.
Drag the textbox center and/or corners over the area to be redacted
Click the "Background" box to set the background color to black (or
whatever)
Click the "Font" box to set the font color to the same color as the
background

Save the resulting file to any desired video format:
File Export Video Export File (dig around for the button) filename.mp4

This will redact that selected area during the selected section of the
video, where my next hurdle will be to find a no-registration video-upload
web site.

Does anyone know of a no-registration video (i.e., large file) upload site?

When using Shotcut, watch out for this editing anomaly!
http://wetakepic.com/images/2017/10/09/shotcut1.jpg

The oddest anomaly happened while using Shotcut which is completly
unintuitive, but it threw me for a loop for a couple of days (elapsed time
as I was working on other projects), so I don't want others to get stuck
with this Shotcut-specific export problem.

I found the solution he
https://www.reddit.com/r/shotcut/comments/6tajpo/my_text_filters_dont_show_up_in_exported_video/

The problem was that the video was greatly edited such that it played
perfectly in shotcut, with all the sensitive information (which Android
reports a *lot* of) blanked out - but - when exported - there were no
errors - but - the areas were NOT blanked out!

Huh?

It turns out that the one character you can *not* use to blank out text
areas is the "space" character!

You can use *any* other character - e.g., underline, dash, x, whatever ...
as long as it's not the space character - then the areas you blanked out
inside the editor will *also* be blanked out in the final video output!

Who knew?
Not me.

I know now.
So do you.
http://wetakepic.com/images/2017/10/09/shotcut1.jpg

Now that this oddity is solved, my next hurdle will be to find a
no-registration web site that will upload a 5-minute 50 MB MP4 video.
