Default Win 7 DELETE !

Desktop with Win 7 Pro all up to date.

USB drive with large files.

I want to delete selected files but...

I Ctrl-Click on several files in the USB drive.

Then I Shift-Delete.

Win 7 asks if I want to put in recycle bin.

WHAT ????

If I select only one file then SHIFT-DELETE does the permanent delete.

What is going on ???

Is there another way with WIn 7 ?

Is there an app that will appear in the right-click menu to do a direct
and permanent delete.

These are huge files and a recyclebin is way too long to then tke out
the trash.

Thanks M$ for the misery !!!

No consolation, but I've had something similar (not quite the same) - I
think it was on my 98SElite machine; the problem I had was that the
shift part of shift-delete sometimes didn't work (i. e. as you
describe); repeating it nearly always did. It happened with single files
as well as multiple. I can't remember if it went away eventually, or if
it's still doing it: I rarely delete from Explorer on that machine (I
usually delete from IrfanView, which I have set to delete anyway).

If I select only one file then SHIFT-DELETE does the permanent delete.

What is going on ???

Temporarily at least, while you're doing whatever you're doing, you
could set the system to delete rather than put in the bin, assuming 7
still offers that feature. (I can't remember where the setting is.)

That's odd. My Win7 Recycle Bin doesn't show external drives when I delete
from them (USB hard drive or flash drive). It asks if I want to
permanently delete the file. When deleted from the external drive, it does
not show up in the Recycle Bin.

But, since your USB drive does show up in your Recycle Bin, you may try
this. Although this is for Win10, it's the same for Win7.

For USB keys at least, they come in two flavors. They
used to be pretty consistent with regard to the RMB bit.
Which says the USB key is "removable media". But larger
USB flash drives have now taken to using the opposite
value of the RMB bit (pretending they are hard drives).
Which means, if you hold a handful of USB keys in your
hand, they won't be consistent about some of their behaviors.

(mentions RMB)
http://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbstick_e.html

My USB keys here, seem to do immediately delete. I haven't
checked them to see which ones have RMB=0 or RMB=1.

It works fine.

Do it more carefully.

Make sure you're not mis-reading the "Do you want to permanantly delete
xxx" prompt as "Do you want to move xxxx the recycle bin".

Same here on my 7 external/portable drives. There is a "Recycle Bin" and
a "System Volume Information" icon on the drives but it's never used.
Why I dunno?

USB Drive not pen or flash. It's 5TBs

MOUSE
OK, if I hold SHIFT and right-click it says Delete which I click and
then it does do a permanent delete for one or multiple selections.

KEY
If I Key SHIFT + Delete it does NOT do a permanent delete with multiple
selections.
Single selections it does do a permanent delete.

Other people are seeing something similar. Like the post
at the end of this thread.

https://www.sevenforums.com/general-...ft-delete.html

Someone here thinks there might be a timing issue with Explorer.

https://superuser.com/questions/7273...-affect/727342

I've seen another bug, where there is a refresh problem with
large numbers of files that have gone missing. Explorer has
trouble ever coming back with a recomputed file list.

It could be a bug, rather than a threshold, or a setting somewhere.

I delete one large file on my backup drive every month, to make room for
the next backup. I always use shift, right click on the file and
delete. It always works. So, I just tried using the delete key and it
worked also. BTW, I just opened the drive by clicking on computer and
then the external USB drive.

You can always disable the confirmation dialogue by right-clicking the
Recycle Bin.

I think Win 7 was just wanna be careful when you tried to delete
multiple files. Just my guess... I don't mind seeing a confirmation
dialogue because mouse could click on the wrong place.

Is there an app that will appear in the right-click menu to do a direct

Do not forget that you could have formatted the USB drive! All files
would have been cleared!

If you use MacriumReflect you would'nt need to do that.

I don't want to hijack the subject, but here goes. I do use Reflect
(manually, I do the deletes, etc.) for my C drive (Win7 and installed
programs). For data on the D drive, I just copy it. My own preferred
way to do it.

I do exactly the same, other than using SyncToy for the D: copy, as this
goes much more quickly once the copy already exists (I cycle round three
of them), as it only copies new files that aren't already in the copy,
or have changed.
