Complete DirectX9 Download Source
Hi,
I have been unsuccessful in finding DirectX9 that is complete (no installer) so I don't have to be connected to the internet in order to install DX9. In some cases, I found it "bundled" with some other "stuff". Note: I have dual boot PCs, Win98se/WinXP. I want to install DX9 on Win98 partition. Thank You in advance, John |

Thank You in advance, John John: Try Here; http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl...s.aspx?id=8109 directx_9c_redist.exe John And for some reason, this popped up in my browser in a search. http://www.oldapps.com/directx.php?system=Windows_98 The size on that file is quite different. Yet it is also Jun 2010. There is also the DXSDK from June 2010. Some games need particular "helper" files like "d3dx9_35.dll" and the redist folder in the SDK has some CABs with stuff like that. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl...190a24fa6=True The danger with this stuff, is the kernel checks added to later versions, to prevent WinXP era games from playing on Win2K. There was no particular reason for that to be necessary, because patching out the calls in question resulted in a working game on Win2K, proving the "Is it WinXP" checks were for the most part, totally unnecessary. And I don't know at what point, that stuff would be poisoned for Win98. ******* My recollection from back then, was some DX7 titles were certainly "compatible" in some softie definition of the word, but if you offered multiple render paths to the game, it would choose the "inefficient" DX9 one. This might overpower a PC attempting to play the game, and have you wishing you hadn't installed DX9. So to some extent, if might depend on the vintage of games you were playing. I had one game of dubious play value, that might have been DX5 or so, and I think you could still view the screen in DX7 era, and then the screen turned black in DX9 and you couldn't navigate. It's a "be careful what you wish for" kinda world. A world where an OS backup before testing, is required. The DX installers don't uninstall, so "going backwards" is totally up to your own ingenuity. And the "bundling" with other stuff, is so the game gets the particular d3dx9_35.dll or d3dx9_36.dll or whatever version the game was designed to use. There might be a dozen different purported DX9c downloads, of which files like that are the only difference from one to the next. And you might have to install all dozen of them, to have a complete set of helpers. The "bundling" helps in the sense that the redist version of DX9c provided, would have the helper needed. But the occasional question comes up, where a game demo was provided, with no bundled lib with it, leaving people to feel around in the dark for some d3dx9_35.dll type file. Also, towards the end of the DX9c era, a number of downloads were offered, that refused to install on my machine. The description provided for the download, may not have been accurate as to which OS it was intended for. Maybe it was DX9 for Vista era or something. At the time, I just moved on, rather than investigate what the install matrix might look like. Microsoft doesn't know what "version control" is, in any practical customer-facing way. I still remember the days, where some helpful web page would be identifying the files by their "size in bytes". Hilarious stuff. So much hair loss... Paul |

I will try that on one of my "test" laptops when I finish a few other projects first. Again Thanks, John UPDATE: I tried to install "directx_jun....." on my "test" Win98 laptop, but during the extractions an error occurred, "This program has performed an illegal...." Error Details: "Invalid page fault in module unknown at 0000:7FCC321F, etc. etc. John |

I tried a link someone posted in a thread, and the stupid microsoft site offered to download Windows 10. Try something from here. Or look at your collection of game CDs and see if a game from 2006 is available to provide the 2006 one. http://www.falconfly.de/directx.htm Paul |
