Strange email from .NET Messenger
I just got the strangest from .NET Messenger Service
Staff ]. The email address just doesn't look right and the address below doesn't match what MSN has on their website for an update to MSN 6.0. I didn't try to access. I think Microsoft would NOT send an email to me in plain text format, rather they usually have pop-ups when updates are available. What do you all think?? Here is the body of the email: ATTENTION: IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED FOR MSN AND WINDOWS MESSENGER USERS. You are receiving this e-mail because you are a MSN Messenger or Windows Messenger Service user. As part of Microsoft's Trustworthy Computing initiative, Microsoft is updating the .NET Messenger Service and providing you with an important MSN Messenger or Windows Messenger security update. If you are using MSN Messenger 5.0, Windows Messenger 4.7.2000, or MSN Messenger for Mac 3.5, or any versions higher than these, you do NOT need this security update. To find out which version you have, select the 'Help' menu in Messenger, then select 'About'. If you are using an older version, or are not sure, please visit: http://messenger.msn.com/Help/Upgrades.aspx for an update. Strange email from .NET Messenger
I've had 8 copies of this email which doesn't exactly inspire confidence
that it's genuine. Counter on 4 here. Stranger still is that it doesn't seem to have anything harmful, like an attachment, html-code or suspect links (not that I tried). Erwin. |

Strange email from .NET Messenger
I have had about 20 of these identical mails this morning and find
them very disconcerting. Surely the message would have been put across in some other way. I am very suspicious of these and would appreciate any help from anyone with any ideas about them. I haven't done anything about them, just deleted all but one, but they are spamming aren't they? Christine "John Burton" wrote in message ... "Paul" wrote in message ... Strange email from .NET Messenger
8 and counting here as well.....
I have several Hotmail accounts I use for different things but am onbly receiving the emails in one of them. The one I'm receiving these eamils to though is one I hardy ever use for email. I just use it as my Passport to access Messenger on my Orange SPV phone. The rest of you receiving there... do you use it to log onto Messenger when mobile? It is unusual for it to be in plain text.... The links go to the official Microsoft site by the looks of it. Because they are not showing as hyperlinks you can see the exact address it is taking you to which appears genuine. I've followed the links in the email I received and it looks to go to the official site. Browsing the msn site, starting from http://messenger.msn.com it is easy to get to http://messenger.msn.com/Help/ Can't find a link on there to Upgrades.aspx mind. To me it does look genuine. Reading the page the email takes you to it just then links to http://messenger.msn.com/Download/ where you can download messenger 6. This is the propper address for messenger downloads. Not sure why I'm only receiving them to one of my addresses and why I'm getting 8+ of them... Think i'll email someone... Will let you know if they get back to me. Strange email from .NET Messenger
This was my suspicion too, as I was unable to navigate to
the site. However, the more likely scenario is that the message is just designed to spread as widely as it can. Still would like to know from someone at Microsoft, but that doesn't sound very likely. -----Original Message----- (Erwin Blonk) wrote in message . com... True, but is the site @ MSN it links you to just a REALLY GOOD LOOK-ALIKE USERS SITE? Could it me an MSN customer who made their site @ MSN (homepage) look so realistic you'd think it was microsoft and download their "patch"? Last I knew, Microsoft didn't use their MSN.COM domain for messenger distribution. . |

Strange email from .NET Messenger
Greetings All,
This is a *legit* message from Microsoft. If you are using Windows Messenger 5 however, you may be receiving these, you can just ignore them as you will not be prevented from signing in when the older versions are stopped. ____________________________________________ Jonathan Kay Windows MVP, Messenger Associate Expert http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/ Messenger Resources - http://messenger.jonathankay.com "Paul" wrote in message ...
