Also, when you install anything new and if it requires latest version then you will be prompted to install the latest version. See this article if you are still desperate: https://support.microsoft.com/kb/179113/ So you think latest is the best right? Good luck. |

Hi, Vanguard.
Thanks for that link. I had already run dxdiag.exe and was disappointed that it said my 8.1 pro w/Media Center system was running DirectX 11, which I assumed meant 11.0. But that Support page says, near the bottom: "Note Currently, DirectX Diagnostic Tool may show DirectX 11 as the DirectX version number for DirectX 11.2 and DirectX 11.1." Since my system is fully Updated, I must actually have Direct X 11.2. ;) RC -- R. C. Hi, RC.
Direct X, for me, has always been one of confusion. I recall on my last desktop system that had Win7 Sp1 but older hardware (2005 era). Windows provided the latest DX with Win7Sp1 or via WU and DX reported the latest as present...yet checking the Intel Graphics Control Panel indicated it was a lower version. Which seemed to indicate that Windows might provide the latest but the hardware still decides/chooses what version it can use/support. Today, I'm on Win8.1 Pro fully updated (including that last monster November rollup) on an Intel i3. Dxdiag reports version 11 (not 11.1 or 11.2 as the KB articles indicates as a possibility)...yet if I run the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel system information tool it reports I'm using 10.1. Lol...More of the same confusion for the same pile. What I do know g....Everything works just fine...and for my usage I probably wouldn't even notice or have a need for the latest DX version. ...w R. Since my system is fully Updated, I must actually have Direct X 11.2. ;) And for more confusion, the registry keys at: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DirectX HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\ DirectX report a really old version. I'm on Win7 now and those keys say that I have 4.09. Uh huh. Then I looked at the details property of: C:\Windows\System32\d3d11.dll That says "product version 6.2.9200.16570". This is not getting any less confusing. I used AMD Catalyst to show software information. Alas, that doesn't tell me the DirectX API version in Windows but just the versions of AMD's drivers. Since DirectX is a collection of various APIs, could be they're at varying versions and "11" (or "11.1" or "11.2") merely reflects the collection's version, not the version of any particular component. |

Win8 includes the latest Direct X and the only route to install/update is via Windows Update. If Windows Update doesn't offer then what you have is it. The only other route would be to completely reinstall Windows (and most likely the same exact version will be present until Windows Update offers a updated version...and that doesn't happen very often during a product's lifecycle. -- ....winston msft mvp consumer apps |
