Default Messenger (4.7/5.0) behind WinXP Firewall

I'm using a small local network (2 PCs desk and laptop
direct connected without router) with Files and Internet
sharing.
My desk PC is the main computer, it's direct connected to
Internet behind WinXP Firewall exclusively (NO other
firewall installed).

PROBLEM
After installing QuickCam from Logitech I start using it
with Windows Messenger 4.7 or MSN Messenger 5.0.
When the WinXP FIREWALL is DISABLED everything WORKS FINE.
When the WinXP FIREWALL is ENAABLED, I can share files
and instant messages BUT NO VIDEO/AUDIO CONVERSATION
starting.
I UNinstalled and re-installed MSN Messenger 5.0 without
success to my Firewall problem.

What do I need configuring for WinXP Firewall enabled and
working with Windows Messenger 4.7 or MSN Messenger 5.0.

Best Regards

I believe Video/Voice chat uses ports 5004/65535 UDP (someone correct me if
I'm wrong). Try adding a service to unblock those two ports on the Windows
XP Firewall.

Start - Control Pannel - Network Connections - [Your connection] -
Properties - Advanced - Settings - Add

I don't know if this will work, because I am not sure of the port numbers
but it's worth a try.

Hope this helps,

Edward,

Yes I know about this technote, it's used for earlier Messenger.

I'm using the latest version Windows Messenger 4.7 and/or MSN Messenger 5.0.
How far I know (someone correct me if I'm wrong) It is not 2 ports
(5004/65535 ) concerned, you may read range of ports (5004 to 65535 ) and
there is no option to open a range of ports, MS recommand to open UDP 5060
port. Those latest version of Messenger address DYNAMICALLY the Video/voice
port (1 of 5004 to 65535 ).

Thanks

Default Messenger (4.7/5.0) behind WinXP Firewall

Greetings,

Windows/MSN Messenger and the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) support Universal Plug and
Play (UPnP), which allows Messenger to open and forward the ports necessary in the ICF for
voice/video conversations. However, it doesn't appear to be working.

Firstly, check to make sure that ports are actually being opened. To do so, click Start, All
Programs, Accessories, Communications, Network Connections. Right click your connection,
then click Properties. Click the Advanced Tab, and then click the Settings button. Check to
see if there are 'msmsgs' or 'msnmsgr' entries. If so, click each 'msmsgs' or 'msnmsgr'
entry and then choose 'Delete' to each one. Then close Messenger (right-click the Messenger
icon, choose Exit), then restart Messenger and try a voice/video conversation again. If it
still doesn't work, go back into the Settings again (see above), and see if 'msmsgs' or
'msnmsgr' entries reappeared. If they do, then that part is working properly. If they
didn't, then there's a different issue.

Thanks for yr Help Jonathan,
In fact, I found many msmsgs which I delete, No 1 msnmsgr.
I close and reopen MSN Messenger with firewall enabled No success and No
msmsgs entries either.
I test with firewall disabled Video/voice OK.

I stop and restart PC, reopen MSN Messenger with firewall enabled, No
success.
I close MSN an opened Windows Messenger 4.7 No success but they are 2 msmsgs
entries (TCP/UDP) checked.
When I closed Windows Messenger No more msmsgs entries (TCP/UDP) checked
(they are deleted automatically).

Thanks for other/different issue

Hi Emile,

Well it does appear to be opening/closing the ports properly then. Note: MSN Messenger
doesn't make the two ports when it opens and Windows Messenger does -- exactly what is
occurring.

So, the firewall is working properly, I assume you're using the same contact to connect to
when you turn the firewall off? Have you tried having your friend initiate the conversation
instead of you, or vice versa (although realistically, both ways should work)?

Hi Emile,

Remote Desktop you mean? This really won't have any effect on Messenger (although at this
point, no harm in trying).

What I mean is, you are contacting (by contact I mean Messenger contacts/users), the same
person for a voice conversation each time, so that we know there isn't a problem on their end
(if you were to contact different people).

Thanks Jonathan,
This what I did a same contact in both way with firewall enabled and
disabled.
What about person on another newsgroup advised me installing the Beta MSN6.
He told me having a same problem as I, and everythink solved by this beta 6
rev.
Do I trust this this MSN beta 6 rev??? Because I heard its blocking contacts
with earlier revision and other problems.

Again, Do NOT hesitate advising me solving that problem.

(although at this
point, no harm in trying).

What I mean is, you are contacting (by contact I mean Messenger

contacts/users), the same
person for a voice conversation each time, so that we know there isn't a

problem on their end
(if you were to contact different people).

Hi Jonathan
I uninstalled and re-re-reinstalled MSN, this time I found 2 msnmsgr
(TCP/UDP) cheked and does not disappear even i disable the firewall.
What do you mean about "using the same contact to connect when you

turn
the
firewall off" What contact??
We try initiating the conversation in both ways, NO CHANCE to get
video/voice.

I'M BREAKING DOOOOOWN!!!
What goes wrong???

Hi Emile,

Well it does appear to be opening/closing the ports properly then.

Note:
MSN Messenger
doesn't make the two ports when it opens and Windows Messenger

does --
exactly what is
occurring.

So, the firewall is working properly, I assume you're using the same
contact to connect to
when you turn the firewall off? Have you tried having your friend
initiate the conversation
instead of you, or vice versa (although realistically, both ways

should
work)?

Thanks for yr Help Jonathan,
In fact, I found many msmsgs which I delete, No 1 msnmsgr.
I close and reopen MSN Messenger with firewall enabled No success

and
No
msmsgs entries either.
I test with firewall disabled Video/voice OK.

I stop and restart PC, reopen MSN Messenger with firewall enabled,

No
success.
I close MSN an opened Windows Messenger 4.7 No success but they

are 2
msmsgs
entries (TCP/UDP) checked.
When I closed Windows Messenger No more msmsgs entries (TCP/UDP)

checked
(they are deleted automatically).

Thanks for other/different issue

Greetings,

Windows/MSN Messenger and the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF)
support
Universal Plug and
Play (UPnP), which allows Messenger to open and forward the

ports
necessary in the ICF for
voice/video conversations. However, it doesn't appear to be

working.

Firstly, check to make sure that ports are actually being

opened.
To
do
so, click Start, All
Programs, Accessories, Communications, Network Connections.

Right
click
your connection,
then click Properties. Click the Advanced Tab, and then click

the
Settings
button. Check to
see if there are 'msmsgs' or 'msnmsgr' entries. If so, click

each
'msmsgs' or 'msnmsgr'
entry and then choose 'Delete' to each one. Then close Messenger
(right-click the Messenger
icon, choose Exit), then restart Messenger and try a voice/video
conversation again. If it
still doesn't work, go back into the Settings again (see above),

and
see
if 'msmsgs' or
'msnmsgr' entries reappeared. If they do, then that part is

working
properly. If they
didn't, then there's a different issue.

Default Messenger (4.7/5.0) behind WinXP Firewall

Hi Emile,

Well, the MSN Messenger 6 beta is a leaked version and is unsupported, but others have
reported no problems (although there are some known bugs).

I'm honestly not sure what the problem is, nor can I really think of anything that would be
causing the problem.
