Default Bogus MS help on how to exit Messenger

I don't want or need Windows Messenger. When I click
on "Help" and type in "exit", I get the following
procedure. Only problem is, there's no "Run this program
when Windows starts" option, I can't uncheck something
that's not there....

This is a copy of the help message:

To stop Windows Messenger from starting automatically
Make sure you are on the Preferences tab of the Options
box.
To get the In the Messenger main window, click the
Tools menu, select Options, and then click the
Preferences tab.

Clear the Run this program when Windows starts check box.
You can always start Messenger manually from the Windows
Start menu.

I went through all tabs and buttons in OE Tools/Options,
this, there is no "automatically logon to windows
messenger". Maybe I am blind but I went thru it twice and
saw no such or similar option. Thanks.

Either you do not have XP or you ARE blind it is on the
Tools/Options/General Tab of Outlook Express. Also it is on the General Tab
of Windows Messenger.

Default Bogus MS help on how to exit Messenger

Sorry, I am not using Outlook Express. I am using the
full version of Outlook as found in MS Office Standard
Edition 2003. The Tools/Options window has NO General
tab. The tabs aPrefs, MailSetup, Mail Format,
Spelling, Security, Other.
Windows Messenger is version 4.7.0041. Again the
Tools/Options has NO General tab. Its tabs a
Personal/Phone/Prefs/Privacy/Accounts/Connection. Under
the Prefs tab there is a checkbox for "allow this program
to run in the background". A few days ago, I unchecked
this and the icon went away. But when I restarted my
computer, it was back (even though the option is still
unchecked). Very frustrating. Thanks for your help.

Thought maybe I could solve the problem with Outlook
Express. I installed it, went to Tools/Options/General,
unchecked the WinMes option, no deal, it's still there!

I use MSN Messenger, but still have Windows Messenger on my computer, just
went and exited MSN Messenger and brought up Windows Messenger and on the
PREFERENCES Tab there is a place to check for it to run when Windows starts,
just uncheck that. If you do not have such
then there is some real question as to what you are running.

Default Bogus MS help on how to exit Messenger

I am running Office Standard 2003 on Windows XP
Professional version 5.1 (service pack 1). I go to Add &
Remove Programs / Set Program Access & Defaults / Choose
Custom. Among various choices is Choose a default instant
messaging program. Choice 1 is Use my current i.m.p.
Choice 2 is Windows Messenger and next to that is another
box, Enable Access. So I have checked Choice 1, unchecked
choice 2, and unchecked the Enable Access box. With all
this Windows still forces the Win Mes icon to show up in
the icon tray! Very Kafkaesque.

Next problem, when I right-click on the Win Mes icon,
there is an Exit command. When I click on this, I get the
message "There are other applications currently using
features provided by Win Mes. You must close these other
apps before you can exit Win Mes. These apps may include
Outlook, Outlook Express, MSN Explorer, and Internet
Explorer". This is beyond frustrating, that the option to
exit exists in a menu command, but in practice has been
disabled. Only when I quit Outlook does the Win Mes icon
disappear. Also very Kafkaesque.

Third problem, when I open Win Mes
Tools/Options/Preferences, there are only two choices.
Choice 1 is Allow this program to run in the background.
Choice 2 is Show me as "away" when I'm inactive for 120
min. There is no choice given about not starting WinMes
when Windows is launched. Maybe Choice 1 is supposed to
provide that feature, but no matter whether I check it or
not, WinMes runs. Even more Kafkaesque.

Pardon this short rant, but I feel as if I have no
control over my computer, and Microsoft owns it, not
me....

Thanks,
Reynold

Hi Joel,

Actually there are some situations where this option is not shown, in both Outlook Express
and Messenger.
