I use many different browsers.
I put reviews and ask for tech support at many websites.
Some websites seem to have built-in spell check or is it the browser.

Anyway, I am looking for a free fast loading stand-alone spell checker
that I can copy/paste a paragraph into and have it grammar and spell
check, hopefully with a personal dictionary for adding words.

What is available that is fast loading, fast operating?

(I have word and versions of open office but they are too slow loading
and too RAM-bunctious).

OK, I started with Wikipedia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spell_checker

"spell checking has moved beyond word processors as Firefox 2.0,
a web browser, has spell check support for user-written content

The web browsers Google Chrome, Konqueror, and Opera, the email
client Kmail and the instant messaging client Pidgin also offer
spell checking support"

So using that info, I checked my copy of Seamonkey browser.
It has a spell checker. It also has "Composer", which is
a tool for composing HTML web pages.

Install Seamonkey. Start Composer. Paste some text.
Select Edit : Check Spelling. The incorrect spellings
will be prompted one by one. Select all, then paste
back to your regular application. The spell checker
interface looks a lot like the spell checker in Thunderbird
(my news reader program).

Google Chrome has a reasonably good built-in spell-checker, for any text
that can be entered within web-page text fields - however, it doesn't
support dictionary definitions. But, the way Chrome is built, allows scope
to download and install to add such capability, from the Chrome Store (new
tab).

Safari for Windows does similar job, to that of default Chrome, but can
also check and correct the input-text's grammar, as well...

I'm still using Internet Explorer 6, on XP, as IE8 is just too
RAM-intensive for my system's 512 MB, so couldn't say much about whether or
not the latest incarnation of IE has a built-in spell-checker or no...

I really don't bother with FireFox, anymore...

P.S. - Personally, while using XP, I find it's much quicker just to "copy +
paste" any text, that I want to check first, into a new email, using
Outlook Express, then use it's spell-checker to check and correct it, then
"cut + paste" the whole lot back where I wanted it again. Outlook Express,
not really having that big a memory "footprint", the entire process can be
very speedy indeed....

Check AbiWord. It's a free mid-weight word processor that have both grammar
and spell checkers.

The other is the full-blown LibreOffice suite, or other light-weight-focused
OpenOffice based variants.

I tried it but ...
A little slow starting. Hoping something like Notepad fast but will
spell checking.
No tool-tips on buttons. Tool-tips are easier to ready than the icon
picture.

I remember using standalone checkers in the 8-bit days, so this question
intrigued me.

After a quick and dirty search, they seem to be hard to find.

I know nothing about the following, but something you may want to try:

snip

Try the freeware version of Tiny Spell. It is a small utility that
allows you to easily and quickly check and correct the spelling in any
Windows application.
