Default Running SFC question

Previous versions needed a location to recover corrupt files.
So the question is where would that be on a PC with Windows 10 that has
been downloaded from update?

Media is available here. It's possible Home and Pro are
on the same DVD. The reason for providing details
on size, is I received some too-small downloads
which were corrupted. These are my final working ones.
The corrupted ones were a little over 2GB.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/softw...d/windows10ISO

(Likely to be build 10240 RTM at the moment...)
(A year from now, a later build could be offered for download)
(For SFC, it is best to match the version right now)

Win10_English_x64.iso 4,083,853,312 bytes (US English?)
Win10_English_x32.iso 3,052,865,536 bytes (US English?)

MD5sum = 99feb0f9e7262b7eefa460840a31b59d Win10_English_x32.iso
MD5sum = 23e397a21a9e01f141c64b7e1260314a Win10_English_x64.iso

If you have a netbook without optical drive, you
can also convert the media later to USB stick,
with the old MicrosoftStore utility. This will put
the ISO9660 file on a USB stick for you. I prefer
the ISO format for storage, and convert to USB flash
format when required to do so.

http://web.archive.org/web/201110052...B-DVD-tool.exe

Windows 10 has the ability to mount an ISO9660 file
and make it look like there is a virtual CD drive
in the computer. So you also have that option available
to you. What I haven't figured out, is how to make
the virtual drive "go away". You can "eject" the media
from the virtual drive, but then the virtual drive
just sits there :-) A reboot removes it completely,
but I was hoping it would go away as soon as the
virtual media is ejected.

I have upgraded from 7 Pro 64 bit to 10 Pro 64 bit, apart from the App
problem I've mentioned in the group it seems to be running smoothly.

I've just created a 64 bit ISO as above but on reflection I noticed
there was an N version, I didn't use that one but was wondering as I'm
in the UK should I have chosen that one, especially as the chance to use
image burner failed to open?

It's up to Microsoft to figure out a way to
have SFC be able to consult that DVD.

I can't vouch for the ability of the *user* to
be granted access to the install.wim on the DVD.
My one tool for doing that (7ZIP) is broken now,
since Microsoft did something to the WIM format.
(I can access the x32 ISO, but something in the
x64 ISO causes 7ZIP to actually crash.) I would
need to get the beta Win10 ADK kit, and see if
that offers a way.

Microsoft could also pull the file referenced
by SFC, from their server if they wanted.

The ones with the letter version, have things like
Windows Media Player or Internet Explorer turned off.
To meet EU legal requirements from past settlements
perhaps.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/w...ws-7-n-edition

"The N editions of Windows 7 allow you to choose your
own media player and software required to manage and
play CDs, DVDs, and other digital media files. If you
choose to use Windows Media Player 12, downloading it,
along with related software, is free."

So this is intended to be a barrier to "bundling" and
locking out other third-party developers from providing
such functions.

At some point, Microsoft had also implemented a "Browser choice"
screen, so you could see or view the options besides
Internet Explorer. Then, they conveniently disabled
the function, until the EU caught them doing it.

In the latest bit of good-natured fun, the Firefox team
has managed to steal search away from Bing, when you select
Firefox as your default browser. As Microsoft was overriding
the search choice. So the warfare continues. Bundling
for the win. If only the users knew... or realized...
what was going on. And Windows 10 is wired to the gills
with controlling the search, keeping everything
you accidentally type in a search box (when you
were searching for a program say), that wort
of thing.

I'm sure I've had a version of Windows which demanded a DVD for sfc
/scannow, I don't think 7 ever asked so I guess it was XP, that or age
is addling the brain.
