On OE6 - How do I suppress a certain newsgroup thread ?
Hello All,
I'm using Outlook Express 6 for my newsgroup browsing, and have arrived at a point where I would like to be able to suppress (hide/delete) a certain thread, meaning a certain post and all future replies to it. OE 6 is able to block senders, but that does not extend to responses to such messages. I can also put a "you don't want to read this" marker on messages (which does extend to replies made to it) but alas, those are *very* visible (actually having the opposite effect :-) ). Does anyone have an idea how to do it ? Regards, Rudy Wieser |

Does anyone have an idea how to do it ? Use "Message Ignore Thread". You can hide ignored threads so they are not visible at all INITIAL SET-UP Create a view which hides ignored messages... 1. Go to "View Current View Define Views" 2. Click "New" 3. In box 1, "Select the Conditions", put a check-mark next to "Where the message is watched or ignored" 4. In box 2 "View Description" 3.1 Click on the underlined "watched or ignored" and select "Ignore" 3.2 Click on the underlined "Show/Hide" and select "Hide" 5. In box 3 "Name of the view", enter the name "Hide Ignored Messages" 6. Click OK. THEN, TO HIDE IGNORED THREADS Change your view to your new "Hide Ignored Messages"... 7. Go to "View Current View Define Views" 8. Select "Hide Ignored Messages" 9. Click "Apply View..." 10. Take your choice of ( ) The currently selected folder ( ) All of my folders 11. Click "OK" -- Kind regards Ralph 🦊 |

Ralph,
Use "Message Ignore Thread". Thats the "you don't want to read this" marker I mentioned (I've set the "watch or hide" column to be visible - I "watch" my own messages, causing replies to them to stand out). You can hide ignored threads so they are not visible at all Although I was aware that I could create message rules, I was not aware I could change views in a similar way. So thank you for both mentioning it as well as the thorough explanation. :-) Regards, Rudy Wieser |

On OE6 - Change user blocking to ignoring ?
Ralph,
I do not directly see it and can easily imagine it doesn't even exist, but I have to ask: Is there a possibility to change the effect of the "blocked (newsgroup) senders list" from outright deleting their messages to them being ignored ? The reason I'm asking is that that way I can, if needed, always unhide them to see what they wrote - which isn't* possible when the posts are deleted. *well, unblocking them, deleting the involved .DBX and than revisiting newsgroup will (reloading all messages), but its cumbersome. I already have made a message rule to emulate the above, but that makes maintaining of its blocklist cumbersome (having to add / remove "apply to" entries) ... Regards, Rudy Wieser |

AFAIK you would have to replace the "Blocked Senders" entries with rules to mark the message as ignored. -- Kind regards Ralph 🦊 |

Ralph,
Not that I know of. I was already afraid of that. Oh well, nothing lost. AFAIK you would have to replace the "Blocked Senders" entries with rules to mark the message as ignored. Yep. Thats what I described in the last paragraph. :-) Regards, Rudy Wieser |

Regards, Rudy Wieser Here is a method given by someone who responded to a similar post some time ago: With OE open: Edit | Find | Message | in Subject, type or paste the subject of the offending message | Find now | In lower pane, right-click on the message line | Move to Folder | Deleted Items (under Local Folders). On OE6 - How do I suppress a certain newsgroup thread ?
George,
Here is a method given by someone who responded to a similar post some time ago: [snip] Thanks, thats quite a novel way to do it. I would not have expected *new* messages (posted into that thread) to be redirected to the "deleted" folder too. Regards, Rudy Wieser |

On OE6 - Change user blocking to ignoring ? - an observation
Ralph,
Just as a heads-up: AFAIK you would have to replace the "Blocked Senders" entries with rules to mark the message as ignored. It looks like the display rules are applied before the filtering ones. That means that a new message that gets the rule applied to be ignored will still be visible in the list - but be invisible after that. Regards, Rudy Wieser |
