Default Outlook for Win XP

What version of MS Outlook should I be looking for to run on Win XP
laptop with the latest Windows updates ?

I do have installers dating back eons so I probably have on that will
work but a version would help eliminate misfires.

Thanks !

Often when people say MS Outlook, which I abbreviate as OL, which is a
part of the MS Office suite and is a MS Exchange client and PIM which
includes being a mail agent which is MAPI capable; they actually mean MS
Outlook Express, which I abbreviate as OE, which is NOT part of the
Office suite nor an Exchange client, but is a mail agent w/ a similar
name and part of the IE browser and is NOT MAPI capable.

Which do you mean, OL or OE? OE is free; OL is not and needs a licensed
product key.

2003 & 2007 will work. I didn't use 2010 in XP because by that time I
had Windows 7.

Now I have Windows 10 and I use 2019 but you can't use this version on XP.

The last v. of MS Office to support XP was Office 2010 v. 14.0

Tables don't really help, because whether a product
works or not is not sharply defined. (The behavior
of the installer, is not the same thing as the behavior
of the actual outlook.exe executable.)

https://www.keynotesupport.com/windo...ty-chart.shtml

Compatibility Chart for Windows XP and Microsoft Office

Windows XP * Support ended 8-Apr-2014

Office 2019 Not Compatible. See System Requirements for Office
Office 2016 Not Compatible. See System Requirements for Office
Office 2013 Not Compatible. See System Requirements for Office

Office 2010 The 32-bit edition only of Office 2010 is compatible
with Windows XP with Service Pack 3 (SP3).
See System Requirements for Office 2010.

While this article might seem like a joke, it also contains
a bit of information about the speed the programs run at.

https://raymii.org/s/tutorials/Offic..._on_Linux.html

OK, this one hints that the installer is booby trapped.

https://support.office.com/en-us/art...b-0b7e92be52e8

"If you try installing Office 2016 or Office 2013
on a PC with Windows XP or Windows Vista, you'll
get an error message. These are some of the errors you may get:

Installing Office 2016: The procedure entry point SetWaitableTimerEx
could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll

Installing Office 2013: The procedure entry point
K32GetProcessImageFileNameW could not be located in the
dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll

That kind of booby-trapping does not mean the installed software
would not run. Microsoft uses these tricks to prevent users
from doing that. As an example, I had a game that ran on WinXP
but not Win2K, due to that style of issue above. By commenting
out two branch instructions in the game code and replacing with
NOP instructions, the game ran on Win2K just fine, all the way
to the end of the first level. No problem at all.

So at least with that article, now we have some idea what
to expect. If the installer for Outlook will start, then good.

if it throws the K32GetProcessImageFileNameW error, then
you have your answer. That's an artificial log thrown into
the road, to prevent you from driving on the road.

I found I have Office Pro 2007.

Not OE !

Will Outlook from 2007 be OK to use for eMail ?
I have the key for it.

Will there be updates for it someplace ?

Does it do newsgroups ?

I am totally tired of the mozilla software that keeps going to sleep
while I am trying to do eMail (thnderbird) and newsgroups (seamonkey).

Microsoft tools have a habit of not quoting USENET
posts properly.

That's for you to decide. I use Outlook for my business eMail.

Will there be updates for it someplace ?

If there are any updates you'll get them automatically but Office 2007
is no longer supported by Microsoft.

Does it do newsgroups ?

Don't be silly. Newsgroups were dead long time ago and Microsoft
decided to shut down its servers. Therefore, Outlook doesn't have
Newsgroups support. You need something called Thunderbird for that. Is
it true that you spend more time changing your name to post to these
newsgroups rather than spending time to learn something new?

In that case you need to give it a cup of coffee to make sure it doesn't
go to sleep. I have never heard of such silly things here before.

You are the most stupid person I have seen on these newsgroups. I take
it you are a lonely, sad person wasting time here to socialise.

I don't know what 'Not' means in that limited context. OE is part of
XP's IE, so it is included.

Yes.

No; considering using XP and OL is NOT considering updating anything.

Does it do newsgroups ?

You can attempt to use OL to do newsgroups by using add-ons, but no
matter how hard you try, you would be better off using OE for ng/s than OL.

Read this: https://www.outlook-tips.net/how-to/...ps-in-outlook/
Newsgroups in Outlook

I am totally tired of the mozilla software that keeps going to sleep
while I am trying to do eMail (thnderbird) and newsgroups (seamonkey).

You would be better w/ either of those than OL and also either would be
better than OE.

So, I would rank for ng/s: Tb or SM OE OL.

There is something wrong, perhaps w/ your profiles, w/ SM & Tb if they
are misbehaving. You should fix whatever is wrong.

One way to setup a test situation is to create a new test profile to see
if it works correctly.

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Thunderbird

If your profiles are not properly maintained, they get 'bogged down' w/
too many or corrupt folder/files.

Here's an article on compacting folders:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Compacting_folders If you don't compact your
folders regularly, performance can slow to a crawl, you can't store new
messages anymore, ... (more misbehavior)

There are also sections at that link about compacting taking a long time
or forever and about compacting not working.

Messed up and bloated folder/files are a big problem w/ both Tb & SM;
but can be corrected or fixed.
