Default Notification area of the taskbar

Is there a way to remove items from this area? I have found the hide
always choice under the taskbar dialog, but it just moves them out of view
with little arrows. I want to remove something from there completely.

Tell the program that puts the icon there not to. All icons are from =
running programs (eg the Current Items). The past items are not actually =
there. There just were at least once and windows just wants to know what =
to do if you start that program again.
