The kind with the dial tone. Thus -- you can't use a "cable connection." Thus -- if you have DSL on a shared telephone line that also has regular POTS (and therefore has filters for EACH of the telephone-type devices, you can connect your analog fax modem to the line in the same way you connect your telephone and/or answering machine. Exceptions (there are always exceptions). There are services (mostly for $$, maybe one for free, but I don't recall its name) that essentially convert e-mail into a fax and thus enable you to send a message TO a fax machine. They also work the other way, i.e., receive a fax and send it to you as an e-mail. For example http://www.efax.com/en/efax/twa/page...?CMP=OTC-us_ma With the advent of VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol) services like Skype and Vonage, there has been some discussion about whether one can use VoIP to transmit/receive faxes. Initially, that did not seem to be an option, but I seem to recall some who claimed to make it work.
