Outlook.com email notification sound?
Using Chrome or if necessary Firefox is there way when using (Outlook.com)
for email to get an audible notification when an email arrives? In other words... In Chrome using (Outlook.com) webmail it shows a notification on the (Outlook.com) tab when there is a new email, but is there way to have Windows make a sound when there is a new email? Currently, I'm looking at something called "Howard" that apparently uses the system/notification tray and probably also a sound. Thanks. |

Obviously you don't want to use a regular email client to receive your email on your PC, which then would have an message popup and possibly a sound? Something like Thunderbird email client? |

Within the confines of a standard web browser, I don't think so, but you could possibly create a Greasemonkey script to accomplish that. Are you familiar with Greasemonkey? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greasemonkey https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/fir.../greasemonkey/ That's for Firefox, obviously, but perhaps Chrome can be twisted into doing something similar. |

If all else fails that might happen, but it shouldn't be necessary. The process, including (Outlook.com) and Firefox or Chrome, displays on the browser tab a notification when new email arrives. It might require cooperation from the browser, but website email should be able to play a system sound when new email arrives, too. The lack of an audible notification option seems silly to me. |

Not to take away from other suggestions, but...
X-notifier lite seems to work well in Firefox without requiring an open tab. It uses polling, but I suspect that's what the (Outlook.com) browser tab uses, too. -- Thanks to the replies. Outlook.com does not provide an option to generate a local sound. Windows does not have a sound option for Outlook.com. X-notifier lite (1.7) working well.
Must sign in to email. Then the tab can be closed. The corresponding Windows 8 system sound is... "Desktop Mail Notification" X-notifier lite seems to work well in Firefox without requiring an open tab. |
