Default Good Video Downloader

Hi,

I tried four different Video Downloaders on my WinXP PC, but there was
an issue with installing, something was missing, etc. Note: I have Internet
access during the installation(s).

Can someone recommend a good (I'm willing to pay for it) Video
Downloader?

Thank You in advance, John

Push comes to shove, try a screen scraper.

I use Replay Video Capture 7.

Whatever is playing on the screen, you draw a rectangle to tell RVC what
to capture and then walk away until it's done.

The bad parts are
- Having to play the video,
- Having to work around that open window (If you don't have
Windows 7 or above),
- A Not-particularly-intuitive UI (which makes perfect sense
and works just fine once you dope it out), and
- Rather large file sizes.

The good part is that it enables you to capture anything you want.

I have that, too, except it will record everything on the screen. That
includes a mouse cursor moving across the screen, popup windows, jitters
and other artifacts on the screen, and anything you see will get record
rather than just the video.

A downloader isn't needed if the site offers the file to the client so
the user can download the file. That's just like downloading any file.
So presumably the OP wants a streaming video capture program. Applian
makes the Replay Video Capture (RVC) program. They also have their
Replay Media Catcher (RMC) program. That will capture video streams.
RMC is actually Jaksta reskinned to present it as an Applian product.
Applian dumped their own streaming capture program a couple years ago
which had plenty of problems so now rebrand Jaksta's software.

To intercept HTTPS traffic means a local certificate must be used in a
man-in-the-middle scheme. The installer will install the certificate in
the global certificate store and attempt to install it into Firefox's
private certificate store. There are times when Firefox or RMC get
updated and the certificate is either no longer in Firefox's private
certificate store or it has expired and new one must be installed.
After some complaints by me and suggestion for fixes, they now have an
option to reinstall their cert into Firefox's private cert store - but
it is quite buried in their options: Settings - Internet Downloads -
Advanced - HTTP (despite a cert is for HTTPS traffic) - Reinstall.

Only Firefox uses a private certificate store. Only Mozilla knows why
they did that in Firefox - and they aren't telling anyone why. They do
publish an API to programmatically manage their private certificate
store but that still doesn't explain why they alone decided that all
certificates will be in their private store. None of the certificates
in the public certificate store are usable in Firefox. For the public
certs, run certmgr.msc (in Windows). Internet Explorer, Google Chrome,
and every other web browser other than Firefox use the public (or OS
managed) certificate store. Because of Mozilla's decision, lots of
products that rely on using their own certs will not work with Firefox
until you somehow get their cert in Firefox's private store. For
compatible cert support, Firefox sucks (but I still use that one instead
of Google Chrome).

You can buy Replay Media Catcher separately or in a bundle (which would
also give you their Replay Video Capture - which is a screen capture
utility).

http://applian.com/products
Replay Media Catcher $49.95
Replay Video Capture $39.95
Replay Suite $79

They used to offer free licenses if you used TrialPay. That has you
trial someone else's product. Some you agree to pay after a trial
period if you don't cancel the trial before it is over. Some have you
pay and give a refund. Most wan't a credit card up front. I used
TrialPay to get Replay Suite for free by subscribing to a trial of the
LifeLock service. I just made sure to cancel that trial at around 25
days to ensure there was processing time to perform the cancel. Of
course, LifeLock keeps trying to spam me to get a new account. Luckily
I used an alias e-mail address which I could easily kill to eliminate
further spam from them. I think Applian discontinued their TrialPay
offers.

Screen capture programs result in crappy results. I've tried many free
streaming capture programs and they all sucked. RMC was the best that I
could find but it is payware.

Hi Reinhard,

I downloaded "vdownloader".

My WinXP Home Edition (SP2) PC has Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0, but
VDownloader requires V4.5. I removed V4.0 and downloaded
V4.5, but I got an error message when trying to install it.

"Blocking Issues: The .NET Framework 4.5 is not supported on this operating
system"

Are you using VDownloader on a WinXP PC?

Thanks, John

+1

I also should have added that it records whatever is coming out of the
PC's sound card -regardless of source.... So, if you are recording a
video and also reading email, any beeps or chimes from the email app
will be recorded in the video output file.

Bottom line for me is that I tend to record stuff during meal breaks or
overnight when I can just walk away from the PC.

The "Screen capture programs result in crappy results." flew right over
my head. Aside from the sound thing and large .mpg file size, what
other downsides do you see?

While using screen capture, I have forgotten the screen - all of it -
was getting captured so it snagged my mouse moving across the capture
region. If if you pause or restart the video, that gets captured, too.
If the video has jitter or halts, that gets recorded, too. You already
mentioned popups getting captured. I don't turn off my e-mail just
because I'm trying to capture the screen in trying to capture just the
region where the video is displayed. If I move the window where the
video is playing, like to do other things during the long capture, then
you lose part of the video (the part you moved out of the capture
region) and will capture anything else that was underneath or that you
move into the previous area occupied by the video. You mentioned sounds
getting recorded that are not part of the video. Also, you may not be
capturing the video at its native resolution but at the size of the
window in which you choose to view it. So, for example, you might be
viewing a video whose native resolution is lower but the viewer app has
expanded the video to its window size which means you get grainy
results, lack of focus, and other artifacts from changing the displayed
resolution from the video's own native resolution.

EVERYTHING you see in the capture region gets captured. That means you
will capture video that is not part of the video that you actually want
to record. Since you are capturing the screen (instead of the video
itself), sounds from ANY source will get added to the capture. Screen
capture is the *last* method that I use if the video cannot itself be
captured. For example, at one time, Applian, Jaksta, and others would
capture RMTPE (RMTP encrypted) video streams until Adobe decided to use
it as a DRM scheme although it was never intended for that purpose.
Because RMTPE was considered a DRM scheme, most (maybe all commercial)
capture programs dropped snagging that stream. So you may visit a site
that uses RMTPE to protect their content which means Replay Media
Catcher will not snag that protected stream. They're playing by the
rules (well, those rules that Adobe threatened to pursue but never did
sue anyone about). There are some free stream capture programs that
raised their ****-you finger to Adobe and continued to capture RMTPE
streams but I've tried some and either didn't care for their
command-line UI or they weren't reliable (for any protocol for video
streams). For those protected streams that RMC won't capture, you can
use Replay Video Capture (or any screen capturing tool) to snag those
videos - but what you get isn't something you want to archive but maybe
just watch a couple times or do some while offline.

Ever see those Youtube videos where some boob, violating the warning on
the screen and the movie house's own rules, will use their camera or
smartphone to record the movie screen for some just-released movie?
Yeah, pretty crappy quality. The video quality is poor, the user's hand
shakes, all sounds from the audience are picked up, the audio from the
movie is echoey or otherwise poor quality. That's not the video that
you want to store into your movie database but it might be all you need
to get a crappy overview of a new movie.

Hi John

I'm sorry causing troubles on your PC.
I have VDownloader 4.3.2190.0 running on Win7.
The info said :
"Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP"

Maybe an older version can help :
Searching with google I found :
http://ccm.net/download/download-8806-vdownloader
This version should run with WinXP.

On www.archive.org I didn't find the SW.
But lots of snapshots of the homepage.
e.g. :
https://web.archive.org/web/20100609...ownloader.com/

In alt.comp.freeware there was also mentioned :
http://www.freemake.com/free_video_downloader/
But I don't know details (adware-free ?, for WinXP ?)

Sometimes I'm useing "rtmpdump-2.3-windows.zip"
from
http://rtmpdump.mplayerhq.hu/
It's called from the command line like :
rtmpdump -v -r rtmp://www.somewhere.com/something.mp4 -o something.mp4

Good luck
Reinhard

It's much worse than that. Capture is asynchronous and
doesn't use VSync. You'll find out, when you examine
the captured frames later, just what a PITA this is.

I use FFMPEG for this, and I'm not aware of capture
programs that trigger on VSync and actually capture
the screen instead of some purported frame buffer.

And the capture jitter is high enough, that if you
capture at 150FPS async, a video playing at 30FPS,
you will find much of the time, the same frame
is repeated 5 times. Because you're oversampling.
But the jitter will show some frames only repeated
once, and other frames repeated 8 times, which makes
it difficult to intelligently resample and remove
the excess captured frames.

A synchronous capture method, would have precisely
30FPS of frames for 30FPS content and would require
no monkey-business later on.

Been there, and done that, and have an entire
T-shirt collection from it.

*******

So if you're serious about this, you want a synchronous
capture utility. Not just some GDIGRAB crap someone
whipped together in ten minutes.

You don't remove older versions of .NET Framework. They are NOT
cumulative versions. Programs may call a specific .NET version rather
than use the latest version. I have all of the following .NET versions
concurrently installed since any program using .Net Framework may want a
specific version of it:

.Net 1.0
.Net 1.1
.Net 2.0
.Net 3.0
.Net 3.5
.Net 4.0 (upgraded to 4.5 and then to 4.6.2)

I'm using Windows 7. Rather than dig into the registry and look at
folders to determine which versions are installed, I use .Net Version
Detector (http://www.asoft.be/prod_netver.html).

Removing any version of .NET could make a program puke that is looking
for a specific version of .NET. You sure VDownloader demanded .NET 4.5
on Windows XP (where you cannot get it; see link to table below)?

"Blocking Issues: The .NET Framework 4.5 is not supported on this
operating system"

See below links about latest .Net version available for Windows XP:

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/lib...v=vs.110).aspx
https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/dotnet/p/dotnet45xp/

..NET Framework 4.5.x requires Windows Vista as the minimum system (OS)
requirement. Looks like you will have to use an older version of
vdownloader.

I found no mention of minimum system requirements at their web site
(https://vdownloader.com/). Their "knowledgebase" is merely searching
their forums for matching posts. Yeah, not really a knowledgebase.
Basically it's caveat emptor: you try to see if it works or fails. You
could try asking them for help (but they may not provide support for
their free version) at:

https://vdownloader.helprace.com/add-ticket

When I look at https://vdownloader.com/upgrade/, it has actual numbers
for various features. Maybe that is how many times you get to use their
free version for the listed function. If so, this is not freeware. It
is very limited trialware. You would probably eat through those limited
usage counts just trying to figure out how to use their product.

After you mentioned "sync", as I recall, often the screen captures
resulted in video and audio being out of sync. It was like watching
dubbed Japanese movies where the lips weren't in sync with the words
(because the actors were speaking differently pronounced words than the
English equivalents).

UPDATE:

I fixed the issue with that WinXP PC I want to use
VDownloader on.

When I tried to install VDownloader (from CNET), I received an error
message. The details about the error was not clear, but I think it has
something to do with my OS.
