I was wondering if it was legal to make a copy of the windows xp cd for a
back up copy, i have a genuine copy of xp home and the key. and wanted to
have a backup of the cd

Under US law (17 U.S.C. §117(2).) you have the lawful right to make
backup copies of your software packages or cds.

The End User License Agreement permits you to make one copy.
