A friend of mine just got a new Win8 machine and how do you like that,
he likes those tiles. I decided to have a look at it as he did have one minor problem I was not able to sort out. In his options he has sign-in set to "no password needed"... and in power options he has "sleep" set to "never". The problem is that after one minute of inactivity the machine goes to sleep and he's automatically logged out. He needs his password to get back to the desk top. I tried a few things such as setting the logout time to 1000 minutes and also turned off any "power saver" options but to no avail. What's the deal with this? |

There are several articles here you could work through, but no mention of a 1 minute sleep issue. http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials...8-startup.html http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...e-disable.html The Power control panel, defines the current schema. I don't expect messing with that, would cure your phantom sleep problem, which just doesn't make sense. The OS will shut down in 60 seconds, if certain security subsystems are not working (some early malware could trigger that). But that would be an entirely different set of symptoms. You say it just went to sleep, and that isn't a security response. Powering off would be. The last post here, suggests an OEM software addition can mess up the regular system stuff. And while not for this particular issue, I can attest to that fact on my Acer laptop, where the backups were screwed up by software that Acer added. Maybe you could take a quick review of installed programs, to see if anything a bit cheesy has been added. http://www.eightforums.com/general-s...urn-off-3.html Paul |

The owner of the machine is pretty savvy, but if he does not get it sorted out by the next time I see him I'll investigate further. This is a tower so he is not worried about power savings |

Won't see the guy until after Christmas but will try some more things then (if he does not figure it out himself) |

By default, W8 will shuts down the display, so check those settings too. HTH Will keep checking. He does not mind if the display blanks out...he just does not want to keep entering the p/w |

Just as I thought, my buddy figured it out before I got there.
He just did a Google search and got a registry hack. There was no way to adjust through the GUI... looks like there are still a few bugs left in Win8.1 |

Yep, we did follow the instructions and all settings done through the GUI were correct, but the system ignored them. Anyway, it's fixed now. |
