Default Windows 10 a disk drive killer?

I am now on my third boot disk since upgrading to Windows 10 in
January 2016.

The first disk had been in service for 4 years prior to the
upgrade, it lasted three months. It was a cheap WD 1TB Blue
disk.

The replacement disk was also a WD 1TB Blue and it only lasted
six months before it developed bad blocks and SMART error.

I replaced it with a Toshiba 1TB that seems to be faster than
the WD. So far so good.

I did notice that Windows 10 seems to unnecessarily beat the
hell out of a hard drive, especially after a boot. Way too much
disk activity for upwards of 20-30 minutes sometimes at 100%.

I haven't noticed anything like that on my Win10 computers. They also
still have their original HDs. I did have an HD fail that developed bad
blocks on a Win8.1 notebook. So, unless others are seeing this kind of
behavior, I'd point the finger at the HD manufacturers' QC.

My daughter's Win7 machine is bad, that way. She does have a number
of softwares configured to run at startup, but, sheesh, that harddrive
just goes on and on!

I haven't noticed anything like that on my Win10 computers. They also
still have their original HDs.

I think you will find is the drives not to OS. Lost several 1TB drives
in the last couple of years some with Windows some with Linux. 1-2TB
drives have a bad reliability record.

Hi

Have a look at the power saving options.
After a short idle time disks will be shut down.
This is bad because a ordinary disk is build for
only (I think) 300.000 start-ups.

I have changed this option to 60 minutes.

With best regards
Reinhard

DiagTrack (Connected User Experiences and Telemetry) killed my
HD in my laptop. Beat it to death. Replaced it with an SSD so
things are faster but there is still a lot of disk I/O going on.

Threads here.

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...7-0130a59e6ee3

C:\Windows\Temp\WPR_initiated_DiagTrackAotLogger_W PR System Collector.etl

The stub article here, claims WPR was included in WAIK. Presumably
someone building installer discs, could include logging in there.
The question would be, why is it running after the system installation
is finished.

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/lib.../hh448205.aspx

The danger with any ETW stuff, is if it gets into an infinite loop,
by logging its own activities. The same can happen with Indexing Options,
if you set it up, so it can "see" its own database file. It keeps seeing
changes in the database, and indexes it over and over and over again.

Whoever commanded the collection of that data, must have been
asleep at the wheel, to have allowed it to run amok like that.

And no, feeding it an SSD is the last thing you want to do.
That's like putting out a fire by pouring gasoline on it.
That just means it can loop faster.
