Default A problem with the printer

I've a laser jet printer "hp LaserJet 1000 series" & it was
working fine until yesterday when
I tried to print a web page, my internet browser shut down & then when
I tried to check
the printer, it was gone!!

I didn't find it in the printers & faxes folder. I tried "add a
printer" & it gave me this error
message

"Operation could not be completed. The printer spooler service is not
running"

What that mean & how I can fix it. I'm using XP SP 2.

Thanks

From a command prompt type NET START SPOOLER and press enter, see if that helps.

I have a similar problem, installing a Lexmark Printer/Scanner. It is a 1200
and I also have a HP Laser Jet 5500 printer that I want to use for the
default. I have tried to install the Lexmark, and so has another person. It
is compatiable but I get the message that the installation can not be
completed and it might work. It does show up as being installed and working
properly. I think the problem is the driver, but I can't seem to get anything
done.

Do you have the latest drivers from the Lexmark website?
