Default USB device not recognized

My computer has 4 USB ports, 2 in front and 2 in back.
Only the ports in back operate properly. When a device
is moved from a back port to the front, it is not
recognized. This problem has persisted for over a year
and Knowledge Base doesn't appear to describe a
solution. I installed a 4 port hub to a rear port and it
is working just fine.

Talked with service for the maker of the PC, or with a competent
technician. The ports may not now be physically connected.

The knowlege base isn't going to cover hardware problems. It's quite
possible that those ports aren't connected to anything on the motherboard,
or that those ports on the motherboard have failed.

Are the front ports connected to the mainboard? There
are a lot of cases that have the front ports but nowhere
to connect them to the mainboard. Especially integrated
boards.
