How big is Windows 7?

Yes those are pretty slow. Although my other Samsung PM830 mSATA SSDs
can operate at the industry´s highest sequential read and write speeds
of 500MB/s and of 260MB/s respectively, under optimum conditions. Maybe

Because it's on a Dell-mini that I almost never use,
I did something I've been told not to do...and that was to defrag the drive.

It really did help.


Since it may be years before I'd defrag the drive again
I am not worrying about wearing the drive out.

Yes I recall you mentioning this before. And that reminded me of this
problem with some SSDs. And defragging could have sped the writes up
significantly.

It is funny since I monitored all writes to one EeePC and reduced things
like pagefile, hibernation, turning off updating the last accessed time
stamping, etc. And I got the average per day down to about 400MB worth
of writes. Then I figured out how long I could operate it before wearing
it out. And it turned out to be something like 4000 years. So I frankly
don't worry about it anymore either. LOL

I run several ssd's.. All Intel 530s, my c drive for win 7 is a 120 gig
and it has 40gigs free. win7 fully updated and a few other small
programs are on it. The next one I buy will be a Intel 240gig.

Depends whether you mean just Win7, or as little extra as you can keep a
lid on, or Win7 plus other software, or Win7 plus software plus data. I
tend to try to keep my OS and software on one partition/drive and my
data on other(s). I'd probably allow about 50G for OS plus software but
no data, and expect that to last me quite a few years, up to when I
might be beginning to think about the next PC.

I've used a variety of different size partitions for Windows 7 with all
software installed on the same drive (60, 80, 100, 120)...I have never,
ever used more than 40GB...my upper limit hovers around 32-35GB.

Note: I do store all data (data files, drivers, pics, music,
installation programs, setup, etc) on a entirely separate disk in their
respective folder (iTunes, Pictures, Media, Programs, Drivers,
Documents, Setup, Misc). Currently these total about 45GB with iTunes
and Pictures comprising more than 70%)

When you say you keep drivers on the second drive, do you mean just the
installers for them (for want of a better word) - i. e. the files you
might download from manufacturers' websites - or do you mean the actual
files that Windows is using on a continuous basis? (If the latter, how
do you tell W7 to do that?)

Downloaded (and saved) drivers not the one's Windows uses and stores.
