Default Low-end scanner that works well for WinXP Home Edition

Been trying to get a low-end scanner to work well with WinXP Home Edition.
Tech support couldn't get the HPScanjet 3970 to work with their HP Pavilion
Desktop running winXPHomeEdition. Visioneer didn't work.

I hear that some Epson scanners work well .... others are problems with XP.

What suggestions do you have about a low-end scanner that will connect
simply with WinXP Home Edition .... i don't need lots of features or
anything fancy!

Thank you.

Just about any scanner made today should work well with XP.
I personally have never spent more than $39 for a scanner. The one
I'm using now is a Mustek Bearpaw 1200CU that I purchased new at a
local discount store (Big Lots) for $29. Has all the features my
buddy got with his $250 HP, and scans BEAUTIFULLY.

I bought a UMAX Astra 3400 for 15 bucks that was a display model, had a full
warranty, all software, at Staples a year or so ago. It worked fine in XP
until I reinstalled the OS, and now it scans perfectly using it's own
scanning software, but none of my image editing software recognizes it
anymore. No problem, really, because I batch scan anyway whatever little I
scan anymore.

You might try the "Windows XP patch" for your scanner available at
UMAX's site: http://www.umax.com/download/index.jsp
