Default Windows 10 "Upgrade" to Build 10586.xx Hijacked My Printer Controls

That's right folks! It must have happened with the upgrade to Version
1511, Build 10586.14 (Or possibly 10586.11 - we blew through that so fast,
I wouldn't have noticed).

At any rate, everything worked as usual prior to that latest "tweak".
("Tweak" is an acronym for "wank" in Microsoft terminology.)

Access to the print center's interface is/has-been normally via an icon in
the SysTray Notification Area. The icon remains with each and every reboot
through the upgrades. I can hear the print center coming out of "sleep" or
"power saver" mode with each reboot - which is at least once a day, but
sometimes a couple of times a day. (This thing boots so darn fast now
since the Win10 initial upgrade that I shut down when I'm not using it.)

Now, when I left-click the icon, NOTHING happens - no new tasks or
processes in Task Manager. When I right-click the icon, a menu with a few
options pops up; some diagnostics and print status options... etc.

I have completely uninstalled the drivers and software, and reinstalled
them - so that is NOT the problem that directly pertains to the change in
access...

Now, the only way to access all of the print center's functions are to run
down Control Panel | Devices & Printers | [My Print Center]... and VIOLA!
That's where Microsoft hijacked the controls and placed them.

Blahhhhhhh... Anyway, I created a shortcut (to the desktop) and then moved
copies of the shortcut to strategic places so I can quickly access the
print/scan/FAX functions without drilling through all the system
interfaces.

Thank you Microsoft, for the unannounced intrusions; it's almost as
complicated as adopting a Penquin now... because the upgrade was "Free" and
that makes it OK... New adventures and discoveries every day!

Maybe just a printer driver issue. I would try uninstall the device in
Device Manager, delete driver files, reboot, and install printer driver
again.

You know wat? THAT WORKED!!! I pulled the plugs, uninstalled the drivers
via Device Manager, uninstalled the software via Programs & Features in
Control Panel --- rebooted --- then hunted down and deleted all the
orphaned directories (some of which still had some various files in them)
--- then rebooted again --- did another hunt; nothing remained...

Then I plugged back in the print center, let Win10 recognize and install
the device...

NOTE: Win10 tried to persuade me via a dialog box to download and
install its different suggested drivers and software package from the
manufacturer; I downloaded it, but since the size was wrong, and the file
name pointed to a more general series, I went with reinstalling my archived
existing [current, most up-to-date] software/drivers package - which more
closely matched my print center's model number...

Viola! It's all back to normal as if none of those 1511 "upgrades" ever
happened.

ALSO NOTE: After your helpful and thought-provoking post, and prior to
my executing your suggestion, Win10 silently updated to Windows 10 Version
1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3116908), then prompted me for restart
options, which I did immediately. After that is when I did the thourough
uninstall/reinstall of the printer and components, per above.

My instant conclusion is that the Windows 8 printer drivers and software
followed me through the Win8.1 and Win10 upgrades, causing a little bit of
non-noticable corruption along the way; and then something in the most
recent Win10 upgrade(s) provoked the 'straw-that-boke-the-status-quo'...

Thank you for your insight and assistance! OK and hooray!

this response is more lengthy than you personally might need, but someone
else might be having similar issues...

knocking on wood in eager anticipation of MSFT's next "tweaks"...

And this works because the migration logic in these OS
upgrades, chooses to "remove" stuff rather than "migrate"
stuff. Leading to all sorts of surprises.

It just adds another variable to bug busting.

And I notice the miserable *******s removed my "MOM.exe"
fix. The previous video driver uses to blow a cookie on
every boot, about not being able to get ATI/AMD "MOM.exe"
started, and I did something to it to make it "knock it
off". Now the thing is complaining again.

That's why I prefer to CLEAN install a new OS (be it Window$ or Linux),
not taking the upgrade route. I am glad you solved the problem.

It usually provides information like ink level, while some users don't
know about the existence of Windows Fax and Scan.

Device Manager----------------------
I had a friend's Dell 1550 laptop where the sound quit.
I checked to make sure the sound was not muted.
I uninstalled the drivers for his audio and installed the newest ones. No
luck.
I uninstalled those drivers and put in some older ones.
Later I read that the sound card (built in) on those MBs went bad so I was
sure that that external USB card was the only solution. I finally bought him
an USB external card to get the sound working.

While doing more online research on it, someone suggested to uninstall the
audio Device itself from Device Manager + the drivers. I did.

I rebooted and installed the latest drivers again,
And , just like you, that built in sound card worked!!!!

So, I guess that sometimes you have to uninstall the DEVICE itself, and not
just the drivers.

Some cases require you to prevent Window$ from installing drivers
automatically...

I got some sort of error message on the Brian Gregory article... it came
from Giganews, the article number showed in the error message, but a Google
search ended with no results too. However, Mr. Man-wai Chang's insight and
knowledge of computers is starting to amaze me...

That being said, mine is a combo printer/scanner/FAX with both USB and/or
Bluetooth and/or LAN connectivity. It also has an extensive interface with
ink level information and warnings; print status; FAX status - with which I
can FAX or copy multiple documents using the feeder; 'Save to' and other
dialogs for scans; Convert to PDF; OCR scan and edit; and other settings for
various operations... etc.

I don't think it matters as to "what is" the hardware device which gave me
problems inasmuch as the issue seems to be more "what caused" the sudden
defunct; "when it was caused" (clearly, in proximity to one of the version
1511 upgrades); and "what is the best/most-efficient solution." Hopefully,
that solution will help a lot of people save a lot of time in a lot of cases
which don't particularly involve my specific print center.

See Buffalo"s post at where the same
principles/procedures as Mr. Man-wai Chang thoughtfully suggested were
successfully applied to a sound card situation.

Perhaps someone can pass along this information to Brian Gregory. I don't
know why his message was knocked off the server, but he might be interested
in a good and very efficient procedure which worked.

Thanks again to you - and for everybody's help regarding this situation.

It sounds like something MS added for "new users" and to penalize those
who already know how to use their computers.

BTW, I wish that WAS a joke.

It was a st00pid thing for you to publish and intended to make you feel smart
about yourself but you are not relevant and a doo-doo-track IRL too.
