Why does W10 media creation tool always have to redownload?
I noticed it keeps having to redownload every time I run it to make new bootable USB medias. Why? Shouldn't it
already have everything downloaded since it was completed earlier? W10 installers are huge! -- Quote of the Week: "As a thinker and planner, the ant is the equal of any savage race of men; as a self-educated specialist in several arts she is the superior of any savage race of men; and in one or two high mental qualities she is above the reach of any man..." --Mark Twain Note: A fixed width font (Courier, Monospace, etc.) is required to see this signature correctly. /\___/\ Ant(Dude) @ http://aqfl.net & http://antfarm.home.dhs.org / / /\ /\ \ http://antfarm.ma.cx. W10 installers are huge! I don't know the details of how it stores stuff. I can tell you that I always download as an ISO. That's for archival purposes. Then I use this to put it on a USB Flash key. This is copied from another post. The first link is the README, the second link the download. http://web.archive.org/web/201201022...usbdvd_dwnTool http://web.archive.org/web/201110052...B-DVD-tool.exe If you operate that tool from a 64-bit OS, it can make 32 bit or 64 bit USB sticks from 32 bit ISO or 64 bit ISO files. The program might have been written by a third-party, as the program has a strange installation location. And the program might kick up a fuss. I notice one of my USB sticks here, it looks like I might have defined a partition for it (8GB) which was smaller than the whole USB stick. If the USB stick is too large, the program might get bent out of shape about it. In any case, I would not download to just a USB stick. I would select ISO as my option, because I've used the above program with ISOs from Vista to Windows 10 Insider and it's always worked. Even if the program is "cranky" and puts up a fight. I eventually get what I want from it. If you install that program on a 32 bit system, extract a 32 bit copy of "bootsect.exe" from a Win10 ISO and put that in the "Windows7-USB-DVD-tool" main folder. On a 64 bit system, the program just works (but still cranky). Paul |

You can make bootable USB disks from downloadable ISO files. ... I noticed it keeps having to redownload every time I run it to make new bootable USB medias. The MCT is just an executable to download and create the various types of media for the current released version. - older versions of MCT exe files previously saved locally will create the media for the version for which they were released. i.e. The current MCT is version 1809, the prior was 1803, and so going backward. Each, when run, download and create only the version of media for which they were released. It is not designed to re-use previously downloaded content(used to create media or ISO files). -- ....wĄņ§ąĪņ msft mvp 2007-2019 |

W10 installers are huge! Okay, I'm confused (but then I haven't had my coffee yet). The Windows 10 Media Creation Tool lets you download an .iso file. Why aren't you saving the .iso files? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZJEClyPnGg At timemark 2:01, select to download an ISO file. MCT is, as it is named, a media creation tool, not an incremental updater. If you visit the web page from WinXP or Linux, you can be offered just an ISO. ******* Similarly, the Heidoc URL generator can generate a URL usable in any OS, to download an ISO. Once the URL is generated, click the Copy Buffer button, then paste into your favorite browser. https://www.heidoc.net/joomla/techno...-download-tool "Requirements: Windows 7 or newer, .NET Framework 4.x, Internet Explorer 8 or newer. " You could also use the Powershell version of WGet which uses BITS. The purpose of this, is it's a wee bit more reliable (once started). http://superuser.com/questions/36215...ows-powershell (Open a powershell window, or command prompt and type powershell) Import-Module BitsTransfer Start-BitsTransfer -source "http://urlToDownload" where the part between the double-quotes would be a paste from Heidoc tool. Try pressing F10 right after powerup and keep pressing until a blue-framed menu shows up. https://01.org/projectceladon/sites/...ges/splash.jpg There will be two entries Windows 10 UEFI Windows 10 Since the USB key is a hybrid, it boots either. Some BIOS setup screens also allow including the current USB sticks to show as options. But this is an inconvenient way to do it, since the intention of the BIOS setup screen is to make "permanent" changes. The F10 popup boot is for "temporary" boot choices. Paul |
