Dell Update Application

Application Download

Importance: Recommended

Version: 1.9.20.0 A00

Release Date: 26 May 2017

File Name: Dell-Update-Application_31YHC_WIN_1.9.20.0_A00.EXE

File size: 8.08 MB

Description: This package provides the Dell Update Application
and is supported on Inspiron, Vostro, XPS and Alienware systems
running Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10.

After Googling a bit, I'm not sure there is
a lot to be gained from "playing" with this.
Dell just seems to have software quality problems,
and we don't want an updated version of that
program causing more problems than it solves.

I don't know if I did this right or what you were
wanting me to do:

http://i67.tinypic.com/2dakkme.jpg

it only shows one download

Robert

Well, before you grab that, you'd want to go back
to the tray and use the "About" function to see
what version is currently installed.

You can see the version in your picture above is
1.9.20.0 . But humans seem to have a hard time
being consistent in the usage of release numbers,
and the download container might have a different
release number than the software it installs. I worked
with some software recently which was terrible like
that - no two components seemed to use the same
numbering system, and you couldn't tell which parts
actually were a part of one another.

You would not want to install software which was
seemingly older than what is installed currently.
That's the reason for checking, before using it.

That's this version, and still it's a year old.

https://www.dell.ca/support/home/ca/...driverid=v3dt0

https://downloads.dell.com/FOLDER049....1.3.0_A00.EXE

The XPS 8500 isn't in the supported system list.

That suggests the program may have hit "end-of-life".

The Dell Support Forum isn't much help.

So because the 8500 isn't in the list it
will no longer receive Dell updates? If so,
how will that affect the 8500?

The drivers should be "mature" at this point.

NVidia doesn't keep adding code for your video
card anyway.

New video drivers, have fresh code for RTX2080 (their
newest card). The older a card gets, the less attention
it gets. Maybe after six years or so, they're no longer
interested.

The driver may continue to "support" the card for longer
than that, but the driver you get then hasn't changed
since the previous version.

Other than video, the other drivers are pretty stable
all on their own.

The support policies on some hardwares, are absolutely
draconian. One of the sound companies only gives updates
for one year, after release. If the driver is malfunctioning,
you will then need to search many commercial sites,
looking for a later driver. That's Soundmax for you.

*******

The question then is,

1) Is Dell Updates doing anything ?
a) Anything good.
b) Anything bad.

2) Should it be removed to keep it out of trouble ?

This is what you have to decide.

You tried the manual update option, and it "returned
too quickly", which suggests it knows the 8500 isn't
in the list. I would prefer if it popped up a dialog
to that effect, so we'd know for sure. Guessing
the thing no longer supports your machine, is no good
as a customer friendly response.

Boy, you won't believe what happened. I spent
2 hours getting blow off the Internet because
I couldn't connect to a DNS server. It turned out
to be my modem. Luckily I remembered I had a new
one and pulled it out and called and configured
it and now back in business...... whew!

Did you try power cycling the old modem first,
just to see if it would recover ?

Or did it keep doing that each time ?

It's possible the new modem was getting
DNS info from a different server at the ISP,
and that's why it worked better.

I don't know what you mean by powering cycling
but I unplugged it from the outlet, and reset
it and tried to set it up with online support/
phone but it wouldn't accept the admin/password
but they eventually got it back up somehow but
then it crashed again (3) times.

I had to talk to support to get the old one setup
for DHCP and then once finished it started to
recognize everything and the guy stayed on the phone
to make sure all was well.

They were supposedly going to ship me a new modem
so it will be nice if it still comes so I can use that
as a backup.

You won't believe this because I
didn't. After I set-up the new modem
I lost my DNS server for a 4th time!

I called Frontier support again (which
btw you have to wait 10-40 minutes after
going through 5 menu options)and said they
could do nothing and put in a repair ticket.
So after 13+ hours I'm finally back online.

They initially said it probably was a sub
panel that went out and would be 48 hours
before they would respond and there was
nothing they could do. It was out of their
hands.

I only hope it doesn't go down again.

Any thoughts?

The other thing I've noticed , perhaps
because of your updates you gave me,
that the Malwarebytes pop-up error I
was getting whenever I opened it has
disappeared.

We live in an unpredictable world.

You know the Malwarebytes dialog will pop up
again. It's just a matter of time (and some
number of "coin flips") :-/

It's like the Windows 3D pipes screensaver and the "Easter Egg"
in it. The Utah Teapot will appear 1 in N times,
with a certain probability. If you sit there staring
at the pipes screen saver long enough, eventually you'll
see the Teapot.
