e.g. from "Network 2" to "LAN", or the name of my ISP.

Try the following:

- Control Panel - Network and Internet - Network and Sharing Center
(same dialog you show in your online image).
- Change adapter settings (left pane).
- Either:
* Right-click on the connectoid and select Rename in context menu.
* Select connectoid and use "Rename this connection" in toolbar.

Can connections be renamed for Windows 10? I knew about the method you
describe for Win 7 but haven't found an equivalent for Win 10.

Click on the house icon to the left and that will open a window where you
can change label from "Network 2" to whatever you want.

It's exactly the same for Win 10. Where are you getting stuck?

Unfortunately, that renames the network adapter, not the connection. Mine is
already renamed to "RealtekNet".

Left click directly on the house icon (not the text Network 2, and not the
text Home network)

This will bring up Set Network Properties, where you can rename.
