Default Update 98 to XP

Am considering doing upgrade from Win 98SE to XP Home.
Does that mean that already-installed (non-OS) programs and data will
have to be backed up and reinstalled?? Or can ugrade install be
accomplished by simply utilizing the installation disk, without losing
anything already installed?

If you are talking about Word or other files that are in Office, you will
have to install those programs. They are not part of Windows.

I just updated from Windows 98 to XP. All the moved files
are in Notepad. How can I manipulate these files so that I
can open them?
Also, Lost my addresses in Outlook Express with the change
from 98 to XP. How can I find my addresses and move them?

Do an upgrade installation and all your data will be left intact.
