! Command Prompt Shift Key Stuck Bug with Newest NTVDM Updates

I remember this from my DOS days - press CTRL-ALT-LSHIFT=20
to stop the shift key "sticking"...

I've recently updated my Windows XP system with all=20
the Windows Updates
and now I've got a huge problem. Whenever I open a=20
command prompt (dos box)
and run EDIT.COM then press the arrow keys, instead of=20

around, a selection highlight is created. For example if=20

cursor moving to the
second character in the line, the first character is=20
selected (highlighted).
I thought that it might be that the SHIFT key is stuck=20
but it's NOT, if I
press an alphanumeric character, the right character=20
comes up instead of the
shifted character (capital/lower case), also, pressing=20
any other character
brings up the correct one (1 NOT !), only the arrow keys=20
seem to be
affected.


Any ideas? It's REALLY annoying.

Could you please reply after applying the following steps.
In the edit.com window
click ALT+O and ALT+c in the display window select default and press ok.

Doing Ctrl+Alt+LeftShift didn't work and neither did altering the
display. Here's what's happening:

If I move the mouse cursor with the mouse it works, if I move it with
the numeric keypad with NumLock OFF it works, but if I use the arrow keys it
has the same effect as if I was using the arrow keys while holding down the
shift key. There's probably a bug in the latest NTVDM update that affects
EDIT.COM.

What I'm going to try is to restore my system and install each of the
newer MS Updates and test after each one separately to narrow down exactly
which one is messing things up (and NOT install it); but that's going to
take some time and it'll probably have to wait until the weekend.

Yes, I tried out the different updates and found that they do not cause
it. The Microsoft updates (including the NTVDMs) are not the problem
although the "811493: Security Update (Windows XP)" update causes my system
to reboot immediately every time Windows boots.

As for the EDIT.COM problem, it turns out that it is caused by the ATI
Catalyst 3.4 Control Panel update. I did several test installing and
uninstalling the ATI Control Panels and the problem only occurs when the 3.4
Control Panel is installed. I've informed them but ATI is notorious for
ignoring feedback and bug reports.

811493 has nothing to do with the shift toggle problem, that's an ATI
issue, and I've already read the KB article on it.

What happened with 811493 was that after installing 811493 the computer
resets every time I boot up into Windows in normal mode (safe mode works).
I don't even have to log in for the system to reset. If I wait a few
seconds once the login screen comes up, then the hard drive light starts
flashing wildly for a minute. This is normal behavior since Windows is just
loading stuff. However after installing 811493, the system reboots as soon
as the hard drive light starts flashing whether or not I'm at the login
screen or have logged in. Obviously something that is being loaded on boot
up is causing the problem.

I'm fairly certain that I had previously installed 811493 without
problem but the last three times that I've installed it on my system (after
restoring to a pre-811493 state), it caused the reboot problem, so I'm not
sure what's wrong or why it worked the first time.

Anyway, I've posted the shift toggle in the [unofficial] ATI forum and
hopefully that can be fixed. With 811493, I can just opt to not install it,
but the ATI Control Panel is necessary. Thanks for the prompt attention and
help, at least MS tries to fix it's bugs quickly.
