Default Windows Update problem

Automatic Updates tells me there is an update for Silverlight, and I
allow it to download and install. Its progress bar progresses and
finishes, and the message above it changes, and indicates that that
"update could not be installed." The balloon continues to tell me that
updates are ready to install. I've rebooted, done CHKDSK......what next?

I'm reposting this....still hoping for a solution to the problem.
I don't like the steady warning that updates are waiting ro be installed.

Did you close all other Windows so there was no conflict?

Don't know if I did, Frank, but I'll be happy to try it again and let
you know.

Okay, Frank, I tried. Carefully. No, I had no other windows open, or
minimized. This time it offered me five updates, and I accepted all
five. It downloaded all five, and successfully installed four. The
KB2416417 Silverlight update failed, as it did before. I followed all
the links, where it said click on the Red-X for explanation. The link
did nothing. It led nowhere. I tried dbl-click, I tried right-click and
Open...it led nowhere.

And now........?

Notice how little response you get since MS closed down their NNTP servers?
That's because people have migrated to their forums, including the Windows
Update forums, which receive a LOT of traffic.

I'm sure you're right, Jack. But in general, finding the right forum and
then navigating in it, are vastly more frustrating than the NGs that are
still active. And it amazes me that the WU procedure, which is entirely
Microsoft installed and controlled, leaves it up in the air.

Next thing I would do is uninstall it in add/remove and then let it install
fresh.

Okay, fine. I've been looking just for the KB item. Yes,
Microsoft Silverlight is there; I'll remove it and try WU again.

Okay, Frank. I Removed Silverlight, downloaded a fresh copy, installed
it, and rebooted......and the WU invitation shield is gone. That was
simple enough. I hope it takes, and thanks for the simple solution. Too
bad the error message didn't coverit!

I had the same problem with silverlight about a year ago and that's the way
I fixed it. Lucky I remembered it.
