And you wouldn't like it at all. Imagine if phone networks were held
responsible for the content of conversations.

We're stretching the analogy somewhat, but let's say someone devised a
method of damaging people's telephones via the 'phone network - and the
'phone company were made aware of it. I'm pretty sure the 'phone
company's lawyers would fairly quickly instruct the company to withdraw
service from that person.

Let's say the damage was caused by certain tones being sent over the
network - and the (a) the method became widely enough known that it
becomes impractical to disconnect everybody who injects those tones, and
(b) it is possible for users to protect themselves by installing certain
filters.

Now let's say the damage propagates - anyone who doesn't install such a
filter, is likely to cause damage to _other_ customers' equipment. (No,
as an electronic engineer I can't think how this could happen. But this
is a thought experiment. It certainly could with malware.) I can see
providers making it a condition of continued provision that customers do
buy and fit the filters.

Granted, in time more than one manufacturer of the filters might arise -
but until they do, I can see providers (under the instruction of their
lawyers) insisting people install the filters even while they're single
source.

Today you wonder if the media has become the opposition - it's become the
political classes against 24-hour media.
