| I just recently discovered how to remove
| "libraries" from Explorer treeviews.
|
| If it's not too complicated, could you share how you did that? I'd love
| to get Libraries out of Explorer treeviews. In fact, what I'd prefer to
| see right away is
|

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{031E4825-7B94-4dc3-B131-E946B44C8DD5}\ShellFolder\Attributeschange from b080010d to b090010d Restart Explorer or Windows for the change to takeeffect. You'll also need to give yourself permission tochange the value. (Another unnecessary Win7 hassle.) I wonder if there might be more variations to do morecleanup, like removing Network, Control Panel, userfolder, etc. The value is clearly a "flag" storage value. Each digit probably indicates specific settings concernedwith folder window display. But that's the trouble with these things: It's nice if theycan be tweaked but I get tired of having to spend lotsof time tracking down obscure fixes for things thatshouldn't need fixing.

Thanks.

One more thing to do after The Big Backup.

Sounds like a dead RAM chip, or a PSU that is being overloaded by
extra hardware that has been installed beyond the original spec of the
machine - the latter would be most likely to happen when a hard disk
that has gone to sleep is accessed and has to get spinning again.

Have you done a RAM test?

Main reason is hardware failure. The motherboard has worn out and become
unstable, so it freezes randomly (I've already isolated the problem). It's
not due to a malware issue, I'm sure of it. I've already confirm it by
installing Windows 7 separately (as multiboot), and it's still get randomly
frozen.

Maybe too simple for some on here. No hunting needed.

Windows 8 isn't bad either - once you put out the five bucks for the
"Start8" utility.

There are free shell replacements just as good as (or better than) Start8.
Classic Shell is pretty good.

I prefer Classic Shell to Start8!

The topic was Explorer treeview. When you
click on Computer you should see the drives.
If you have the Folders Explorer Bar showing
in folder windows then you'll see a "treeview"
on the left side, showing the file system as an
expandable system of branches. In other words,
the Explorer treeview is seen when you open
a folder window. A similar treeview shows in
File open dialogue windows.

In each version of Windows that treeview is
more cluttered with things that are not really
the file system. On XP I see My Documents
(a folder I've never used) and "My Network Places",
despite that I've never had a networked computer.
I also see Recycle. On Win7 there's additional
clutter. Libraries is one of those items.

I see that if I then click on a drive.

You're disregarding the hunting needed to *find* "Computer".

IMO "Computer" should always be the top line. But it isn't, is it?

wrote in message ...

Why would anyone use Windows 7, knowing it was built upon the foundation
of Windows Vista? Everyone who knows anything about computers, knows
that Vista was Microsoft's biggest failure if all time. Yet, they took
that same code and created Windows 7, which lead to Windows 7 on
steroids (known as Windows 8 and 8.1). After that came Windows 7 on
super steroids, loaded with spyware, known as Windows 10.

Why use any MS operating system after XP, when it's all built upon the
corrupt code of Vista?

I know I wont use any of it. I'll stick with XP until it no longer
works, and with any luck, someone will create a new OS by then, which is
not associated with Microsoft. I know someone is going to recommend
Linux, but that's not the answer, since Linux is not user friendly and
generally dont work.

Until the day comes when a useful replacement is created to replace MS
Windows, we're all stuck using an OS which dates back about 16 years.
The world is waiting for something new and different, not created from
corrupt code by the corrupt company known as Microsoft.

I was perfectly happy with Windows XP, but my new computer had Win7,
so I was stuck with it.

Because it works.

Not very well, but not quite as bad as the alternatives.

FAT is a disk format. I suppose you mean DOS.

Otherwise change has consisted mostly of expanded capabilities to keep
up with hardware, bric-a-brac features, and improved (?) cosmetics. As
to XP and later versions, drill down far enough in Windows 7, 8.0, 8.1
and 10, and you find the old familiar XP windows, leading me to
believe these later versions are just XP hopped up and beautified.
