Default Lost HDMI Audio Output

My "multimedia" laptop i.e. that is what I use it for only.
Laptop Win 7 Pro
Connect HDMI cable to TV.

! No Sound ON TV ! But I got sound on the laptop speakers.

I poked around in Control Panel Sound but see nothing to indicate an
HDMI output. I do see other devices that I know about.
Where to look?
What to do?

I have no idea what I might have done to mess it up.

Second laptop Win 7 Pro.
Plugged that into the same cable to the TV and get sound.

What happened to my "multimedia" laptop?
How do I get the sound back through the HDMI cable?

I think that Sound / Playback Devices is the place to look - but the
HDMI device will probably only show up when the HDMI cable is plugged in
and physically connected to a TV. It should then just be a case of
enabling it - but you may also have to disable other playback devices
for the duration.

As I tried to indicate, there is NO HDMI sound icon there.

How do I get it back?

It's not an icon, it's an entry in Sound Playback devices.
Plug everything in.
In the systray (bottom right) you'll find a speaker symbol. Right click
it and select "Playback devices". Click on the speakers you want to use,
wait until it turns blue, and then click Set default; a green tick will
appear.

That's the one.
A word of caution. I use a recording program that needs Stero Mix to
handle YouTube and the like. But it doesn't work with the Samsung TV
HDMI set. So I have some cheap speakers plugged into the sound card
jack. And when I record I have to remember to switch them on and set
them as default; and then back when finished.
Fortunately I only do the recording thing about once every six months.
