Remote Boot Laptop
I have an app running that sends me eMails when it detects certain
things happening. All works fine. Every so often, seemingly randomly, and an untraceable problem, the laptop app decides to stop. Booting the laptop and starting the app resumes the eMails. I have checked the logs and disk and RAM memory and all is good. I suspect but cannot prove that some other service or app is causing this problem. The laptop is connected to the internet via WiFi to the home WiFi router / modem. Can anyone suggest a way to remotely reboot the laptop ? I suspect extra hardware is required but what ? Since it is a laptop with a battery, I cannot simple cycle power. The laptop has USB ports but not much else. Not sure if the laptop is alive enough to get some incoming something to force a boot. Maybe have a special eMail account and sent that an eMail that the laptop detects and then causes a boot. Suggestions please. |

How about using Task Scheduler to reboot the machine upon specified event or every 6/12/24 hours? If the laptop is barely alive, as mentioned above, then that pretty well excludes emails, Team Viewer, Remote Desktop, etc. |

Plug the laptop into an IP remote power control unit. Plug the RPC into a UPS and modem/router. Power cycle the computer as needed. Or use an IP enabled UPS (expensive). |

I think Paul_in_Houstons suggestion of a regular reboot, may cover up the problem and give you some kind of continued service. The only thing I'd add, is look in Event Viewer for a notation, or look for a .dmp file, or other bread crumbs the crashing/stalling mess has left for you. My guess is, the software that senses movement or activity in the security camera input, is leaking memory, and you're running out of real memory, or running out of paged pool. One thing you'd want to consider, is the distribution of crash times. Does the event happen six hours +/- one hour from when you start the security program ? Or is the distribution totally random, so a crash can happen five minutes after the program is started ? If the delay is long, with a low standard deviation, then Paul_in_Houstons idea should work really well for you. The IP security camera itself could be crashing, as they've been known to do that. A well-designed security application would notice the "network outage" and simply return a comms error indicating it cannot query the camera any more. Even if you cannot diagnose the root cause, you can still characterize the crash frequency well enough, to work around the problem. Paul |
