For some time now my start up hangs for 5 minutes and then goes on to boot
up OK.
The screen freezes thus:
**********
Phoenix Award Workstation V6.00PG, An Energy Star Ally
Copyright (C) 1984-2005, Phoenix Technologies Ltd
(above is at top of the screen, most of screen is blank until bottom rows,
which read:

Press DEL to enter SETUP, F11 to enter Boot Manager
11/10/2005 - MS - 7030 - 6A61CM4CC - 00
**********
On pressing DEL, after a long wait, SETUP appears. Today after coming out of
setup (without change) I had to endure a further 5 minutes freeze.
It always freezes at this same point and, ODDLY, it never fails to boot up
OK.
Help please

Since your machine pauses a long time ***before*** launching Windows, this
appears to be a hardware/BIOS/hard disk problem, not a Windows problem. I
would ask the experts in a hardware newsgroup.

Why don't you delete a few items at a time from startup till you find the
causing program?

Because it's not items in startup that are causing the problem, the PC is
hanging during POST, which is before Windows loads.

Access & Clear both System & Application event logs. Reboot the
PC and once rebooted review each log for any Warnings and Errors.
Click Start, Run ( Type ) Eventvwr.Msc [Enter]
From your problem description it sounds like a service time-out issue.

Your computer is freezing at the BIOS. Windows has not loaded yet, so
this is not a Windows question. You may have an issue with your BIOS or
your hardware. A professional geek can sort it for you, but I would
first try contacting the company that made your computer.

Sounds like a BIOS problem to me, this is happening before anything
Windows even starts to load.

Check with your computer vendor to see if your BIOS is upgradable, and
if it is if there is a new version available.

You must be assuming that. Why can't it be a timer that got screwed up.

Hi AT,

The delay into Setup is either hardware or BIOS related.

When you say, "coming out of setup", what are you saying?

Do you see the XP logo and worm for multiple minutes? OR

Is the screen black for multiple minutes BEFORE seeing the XP logo and worm?

Is your Boot Manager in use? Has it always been or not been? I've seen
that delay on IBM workstations that have network boot enabled, but are
not longer being started that way. You may have some settings in Boot
Manager that are searching for other devices, or related items in the BIOS.

I can see why you sign your replys as unknown, your an idiot.
The screen clearly states it's the BIOS not windows loading, no assumption
was made, just read the screen.

Not necessarily. Much Windows stuff loads before there's an indication on
the screen that Windows is in control. For example, Windows may be trying a
remote boot from a non-existent device.

If it isn't obvious to you where the PC is hanging you not going to be of
any use in the thread.

Before Windows tries anything ntldr must first be loaded and you will
either be presented with a boot menu from the boot.ini file or, if there
is only one operating system present, or if the timeout value in the
boot.ini file is set to 0, ntldr will proceed to load Windows without
presenting a boot menu. In either case the BIOS post screen will be
cleared and you will either see a boot menu or temporarily see a black
screen while ntldr starts to load Windows, if you are still seeing POST
information nothing Windows has yet happened. As a matter of fact if
the BIOS POST screen is still present the boot process hasn't yet even
been passed to the MBR so it will be pretty difficult for Windows to be
doing anything!
