Wow! Has that capability been in Windows all along? That's pretty
powerful!!

It's not a Windows feature, it's a feature of that particular program's
installer.

There have been a great many profiles written including the background
of Eugene Kaspersky and I'm not aware of any convictions for hacking or
fraud or other illegal activities accusations.

He is certainly .ru and has educational background from .ru institutions
including one sponsored by the .ru ministry of defense and the KGB.

I think you need to back up your accusations with some reliable reference.

Is there any way to get to the installer other than via the Control Panel?

Why not just allow it to update?

Settings Update Details

Uncheck the appropriate box.

So far I would say that everyone is or must be running Avast just
because no one has mentioned anything different as per my first question.

Panda Cloud (no pop-ups - no nags), Avira, AVG, Bitdefender all free,
all very good.

And the older Avast interface that looked like a car stereo head unit
sucked.

IMO,that would be sensible, but Drew doesn't seem to agree.

How about.... Because in the past many programs have taught me that
newer is not always better. With Avast I have found that they seem to be
dumbing down the program and adding some really useless "tools"?
Unfortunately because of time constraints lately I have not looked into
turning some of this stuff off. Many have pointed out my stupidity and I
appreciate the help in curing the problem. I would still like to know
what others are running and what there opinions are though.

Would you like to give examples of that?

But you have time to engage here. Personally, I have never changed the
Avast settings but your inquiry caused me to spend 5 minutes and I found
out how to turn off the stuff I did not want.

I don't know if you can call it "constant":

http://www.avast.com/release-history

but there are some improvements in several updates, so...

Personally I
think the older interface was better.

You act as if you daily open the UI. I just install it and then let it
run. I don't really care about the UI, so why should you?

Last, but not least, It's _free_ ! You get what you pay for...

Not arguing your point at all but since I am on this machine daily and it
tells me daily about updates with balloon notifications than that is what
I would call nagging. As for the interface well the older one did not have
things like "grimefighter" and "software updater" etc. Once again I say
that it was my fault for allowing it but.... I think it is the dumbing
down of programs that I dislike

The latest program update ends with 2016.
Go to the settings for Update and under the Programs update settings,
select 'manual'.
If you don't want to be bothered by those screen nags at all, 'one' way
is to just rt click on the taskbar icon and select 'Silent Gaming Mode'.
There are other ways, but this is a simple easy way. You have to do it
after every boot, but then it stays that way until the next boot.
I also disable Grimefighter and Software Updater.
I think the free Avast is excellent, overall. Just take the time to go
through all the options available in Avast.
I also don’t use the Web Shield or the Mail Shield. Using the whole Web
shield program, seems to slow down my web browsing.
Use what you want.

One problem I found with Web Shield was that it wouldn't allow some
Javascript links to work. The USTA web site is one I use that was totally
crippled by it. I still have Web Shield enabled, but disabled the IE and
FireFox plug-in for Avast. That was the most common solution found on line;
it allows Web Shield to still run for blocking unwanted sites and
questionable downloads, but also allows my JS links to work. Maybe a later
program update will correct it, since it is a known problem with this
version.

You can sometimes find an Uninstall.exe in that program's program
directory, but running it will do the same thing as starting it from
Control Panel.

Really? Do you run all these?. I was just asking a question and
mentioning a problem that I was having. The second part is now cured. I
still do not have a answer to the original question though. I know of
all these programs you mention however I have no experience with them.
Do you? If so why did you change from one to obviously several others?

As to your other post about the car stereo head unit. I was not thinking
about that particular interface. I was thinking more recent than that.
