Using XP Mode
Dear Win7ers:
I have to use an old program (Microsoft Publisher 97) which will not run fully under Windows 7. I have just installed XP Mode and installed Publisher under the virtual XP. My problem is how do I access my files outside of the virtual machine? The files are accessible on the virtual system through Explorer. My main hard drive shows under My Computer as "C on Digby". How do I specify this with "Map Network Drive" to create a drive letter under XP Mode? (Or is there another way to do it?) \\Digby\C on Digby\ does not work. Browsing for directories brings up nothing. Sincerely, Gene Wirchenko |

The "clever" part of Windows Virtual PC (the successor to VPC2007), was the removal of any obvious Settings panel. That's how you end up missing interesting stuff like this. Just a guess, Paul |

It shows all the partitions on the host, showing up under some mythical "Other" section in WinXP File Explorer. http://mintywhite.com/xp/share-files...chine-xp-mode/ And that's probably a function of the Integration Features actually being turned on, and working. Well, from that, I found that I should use \\tsclient. I was able to set up a subst m: \\tsclient\c\ Publisher will not recognise the drive m: in its list of drives, but does recognise in its Find File (under Insert - Picture File). I have R/W access to my native C: as M: but not under the program that I need. I can get at pictures on the native C: by searching for them. I can not specify the directory. What a roundabout. And not good enough. I want to be able to write to my native C: directly. Sincerely, Gene Wirchenko |

This, using Publisher 97. Sincerely, Gene Wirchenko The display is rendered via Terminal Services. And that is apparently for displaying program windows in rootless mode. (That's an improvement over VPC2007, which didn't use Terminal Services.) The VM behaves like it was a remote computer, so all those partitions are file shares. And the shares are supposed to be set up by the Integration Features. The Windows Virtual PC package, has a couple ISO files it uses (as if they were guest CD drives). One of those has the word "Integration" in the file name, and it's possible that is what adds support for shared folders and so on. I would have expected this support to already be installed in the OS, but maybe some part of that is failing in your case. The installation seems to use "XPMUSER" as the account inside WinXP Mode. I presume something must be added in the host too, to make sharing easier. You might also check your WinXP Mode virtual machine and see if the networking portion is working. If the networking doesn't have a driver in the Guest, then that would likely break sharing too. Really, the Settings panel should be showing the drives. If the drives aren't listed in the Integration Features list, then it's going to be pretty hard for other aspects of it to matter. The drives must be listed, for this to work. Then, something could be broken inside the WinXP Mode VM which is preventing sharing from working, such as a "no network" situation. Paul |
