Ted-- Nice to know I didn't cause the problem. They had

McAfee Internet Security Suite, & Personal Firewall Plus,
in addition to XP's built in firewall running, but I guess
that just isn't enough protection against these !@#$%^ file
swapping programs. I want to thank you and Rich for the
replies. RJM

Use only one software firewall.

Antivirus software needs to be correctly configured and regularly updates.

It's extremely important to visit Windows Update frequently and install all
security patches.

McAfee Internet Security Suite, & Personal Firewall Plus,
in addition to XP's built in firewall running, but I guess
