Default SP2 Add/Remove Programs Problem

I installed XP SP2 about a month ago. 266Mb .......Windows
XP-KB835935-SP2-ENU, Self Extracting Cabinet

Everything appeared to go well, no obvious problems, no crashes, no clashes
etc.

One slight problem was that I noticed that the list of programs in
"Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel has been affected.

It no longer lists all the programs installed on this computer. It sorts the
programs by 4 criteria; Name, Size, Frequency of Use and Date Last Used.

Now none of these list gives me a full list of all programs..... Name gives
me only 6 programs beginning with the letter 'A' ????, Size gives me 12
assorted programs, and Frequency of Use and Date last used give me more
programs, but not an entire list.

I had not initially worried about this problem, but recently I had to
uninstall a program first in order to install a newer version. I was unable
to find this program ANYWHERE in Add/Remove Programs.

To be sure the SP2 installation had gone correctly, I ghosted back to SP1
from my external backup HDD and reinstalled SP2. Same problem....Add/Remove
Programs List was full on SP1 and incomplete on SP2!!

I have since ghosted SP2 to this backup HDD, so can not revert to SP1.

Fortunately I had a third party program (Toni Arts- Easy Cleaner) which had
an uninstall facility which had a full list of all programs on this computer
(interestingly even SP2..which does not appear on my Add/Remove Programs
List). I used this program to do the uninstall.

Can anybody offer me some assistance/advice on how to rectify this problem.
I have searched the internet for similar problems, but been unable to find
any.

Thanks,

Buck

Default SP2 Add/Remove Programs Problem

in SP2 there is a new check box at the top of Add/Remove that says "show
updates". If this is NOT checked the list will be filtered to reduce
clutter. check it to show all entries.

I have the same problem as 'bigbuck', no mater what i've tried it only shows
5 or 6 of the programs that are installed. i wanted to uninstall a couple.
Doesn't make any difference for me whether the check box is ticked or not

Madmax,

Interestingly, I found this a few moments ago.. It's exactly our problem.

With SP2 installed (XP Pro) - the control panel Function - Delete

Programs -
has become mostly unusable ....

Symptoms: - the normal alphabetic and complete listing of the installed
programs now lists the programs

a) very partially - after the 'A"'s such as Adobe -- there is a long BLANK
scroll down before getting to the "F's" - with nothing (it's blank)
in-between showing
b) it's not a load timing function trime - i've been very patient
c) using display by other criteria show shows the same effect - however

with
different programs (ie sort by size, dateg usage, etc).

What has happened here --- what has SP2 done - and how to correct it

please.

The installation went smoothly - I've had no other problems - and indeed

the
system seems to load and run faster.

Thanks in advance - Tiom

When I went back to Add/Remove Programs, I found that if you scrolled down
about three miles....there are some more programs listed!!!
The gap between them is HUGE!

So...I'm a little happier...but it's still very odd.

Buck

Yep, same here. Unfortunately, it is only still a selection of programs that
are listed, split between the start and end. Anyone got 'Bill's' number?

Default SP2 Add/Remove Programs Problem(TEST before posting in future!)

IF you were to test that by un checking/re checking you would find that that
ONLY shows any windows updates and not normal programes.
It is just what it says, show updates meaning show windows updates.
Why don't you try first?
I just did, 30 others did the same and all 30 proved that the"show
updates"when checked/ticked shows any windows updates and when unchecked
will NOT.

Default SP2 Add/Remove Programs Problem

G'Day,

Haven't got Bill's Number, but his employee's advice to me will astound
you!!!!
I am suposed to disable my firewall, uninstall my antivirus !!!!!!!!!
(because it is third party.....aren't all AV products?), and remove any third
party (non-microsoft) programs and then download SP2 (266Mb) on my dial-up
connection!!!!!

See for yourself....

Dear Brad,

Thank you for your response.

At this point I suggest you remove SP2, the following link has information
on how to do this.

http://support.microsoft.com/default...B;EN-US;875350

I would like you to download SP2 though uninstall any Firewall, Antivirus or
Download Accelerator Software. Firewalls and Antivirus programs are 3rd Party
(non-Microsoft) Programs, and although they are mostly effective in
protecting your computer from Viruses and Computer hackers, they do fail to
take into consideration program installations.

I would like you to download SP2 from the following link and not from the CD
you received.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Kind regards,
John #@%&*&

CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT ????????????????????????????????????????????????

Cheers,

Buck

Default SP2 Add/Remove Programs Problem(TEST before posting in future!

(TEST before posting in future!) Thanks for your suggestion Nero. The problem
here as described at the start of this thread is that installed Programs are
missing and the list is not created properly when selecting Add/Remove
Programs from within Control Panel. The check box 'show updates' only changes
'Currently Installed Programs' to Currently Installed programs AND Updates'
It DOES NOT alter the number of PROGRAMS displayed. Subsiquently I am still
missing most of the PROGRAMS installed no mater what check box is ticked or
they are sorted by. For example, nowhere can I find windows messenger in the
list, yet it is open and I'm signed on. Anyone got any idea's?

Mate,

Unchecked or checked.....it makes little difference..........
It simply adds or removes the updates..........

I still have a ten mile gap between programs in 'Add/Remove
Programs'......and I'm not even sure that ALL programs are listed

I CHECKED...........trust me!!!!!!!!!

Thanks anyway,

Buck.

Buck, Likewise, I sometimes had this problem B4SP2 but it was very rare and
overcome by closing and then reopening control panel or Add/Remove a couple
of times. Now it seems a permanant glitch. Also tried safe mode - no joy.
Also adjusted 'view hidden folders', don't now why i did but it didn't make
any difference so I'm out of idea's. let me know if you find a solution.

Cheers all.

I have the same problem with the huge blank space. I also happened
occationally with SP1, but the problem had been gone for quite a while. It
used to appear after AutoCad. Now after SP2 the space seem like 100 pages.

Default SP2 Add/Remove Programs Problem

Buck,
Since installing SP2 last week, I have am having the same problem you
describe. After scanning similar posts, I have found the "white space
removal" a popular choice as a repair that does not work. The interesting
thing is that in my case, after the first 8 programs in the list you can
scroll down (a very long scroll) to find the remaining programs. Please let
me know if you find any solutions and I will do the same.
