Greetings Paul,

Unfortunately just "opening ports" will not help make this work. Windows Messenger uses
Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) to automatically open and forward the necessary ports for this
functionality. Quite a few routers now support UPnP, so you may be able to get a firmware
update to allow it to support UPnP. If you let us know what router you're using, I can look
it up quickly for you and tell you if it does support UPnP or not.

For reference the ports are 5004 through 65535 UDP for voice conversations and 1503 TCP for
application sharing.

Hi Jonathan,

I hope you can help with my problem, which is along the same lines as the original poster.

I am running Windows XP and using Microsoft Messenger on a new computer that I have just installed to my network.

I have a small network (3 computers) using Microsoft Wireless Broadband routers and base station (MN 500 and MN510).

I have never been able to get application sharing to work and now, I cannot even drop a jpg file on the messenger window and have it successfully transfer. I can receive files, but I cannot send them.

I really need to make this work on my new computer. I do Architectural Software Tutoring over the internet and it's vital to collabarating with my students and with my Architectural Design and Drafting Clients.

I am a real dummy when it comes to the ins and out of networks and so I will need some real hand holding and patience.....I sincerely hope you can get me straightened out.

Thanks In Advance,

Bill Shideler
