Well, since we're talking about the genre of priii, how do owners
dispose of the old batteries, in the ground water of a land-fill?

I asked a sales guy at a dealer that and he didn't know. They haven't had
to deal with it yet I guess. He had to ask a few other people for someone
told him to tell customers to bring it to them and they'll deal with it.

They are getting VERY long and discursive.

It can sometimes take a lot to say what needs to be said and it [sic]
easier for people to ignore what they think is irrelvant than to
wonder what should have been added.

Much agreed!

I use my power for:

1. Towing
2. 0-50ish very quickly
3. 80+ on the open road to....fun stuff...

Although a BMW stomped my ass the other day I need to get
back into a car! I had him up to 48. Then quickly lost it.
I'm just not geared for "quickness" up that high. Even though
I already upped my gear ratio.

I've lost track of what you have, think you passed up the SRT8
until the MDS bug is fixed and bought your wife a car instead. Is
that right? If yes, what are you driving that can tow AND be able
to take on a Beemer? I knew I'd get my ass kicked taking on a 735i
but it was still fun. I'd be a close race, likely in favor of the
BMW even with an SRT8, those things scream, albeit at over twice
the price. And, I'm aware of some Audis with 450 hp that claim to
do 0-50 in 4.6, which would shade an SRT8 by about 2 or 3 tenths.

Yes, not around long enough. I looked at 3 different studies last
year wrt the real break-even on gas vs battery vs whatever. One
was the EPA, one was the Detroit News, and can't remember who the
3rd one was, some "independent" source. Results were, as you'd
expect, "mixed", but was about like this: if you drive a lot on
gas, your battery will last longer, if you idle a lot and/or
drive in winter especially at night with a big electrical draw,
it won't. Duh! Then, if you don't drive a lot, the battery will
die, read, fail to fully recharge and give its full life and
power.

Bottom line from my read of these 3 studies: the break-even is
very difficult to attain at anything less than at least
$4/gallon, begins to make sense at $5, and assumes you can get at
least 4 years from a set of batteries which seem to vary in the
$1800-2500 range to replace. At best, this is a GREAT confusion
to them who really want the overall economy, not just be green.
What makes this so tought to nail down is the exact definitions
of various terms, like driving cycle, expected/predicted gas
prices, varying mileage/year estimates, the premium of the hybrid
car over an equivalent economy sedan from the same brand, and tax
incentives. The latter is biting some folks in the ass as they've
discovered to their sorrow that the car they paid big bucks for
sold over the tax incentive max number, something in the 60,000
range, I believe, so they need to add a big chunk of change back
into the equation.

Again, this is all mixed, as in mixed up, but I have read a
number of reports asserting that hybrid car sales are softening
but sales of smaller CUVs are rising as are compact and mid-size
cars with high-mileage 4 bangers, while the big trucks and SUVs
continue to sink, especially those with huge engines, certainly
our HEMIs and the gigantic displacement Ford and GM stuff.

Seems clear to me that a shake-out is coming to the entire
industry as people's tastes and their pocketbooks change, and
their memories on gas prices du jour remain very short,
complicating the whole mess by big iron rising and falling almost
with every 10 or 20 cent change in gas. I will close with this:
if I look at just the inflation rate back from, say the late
1960s, throughout even the artificial price spikes of the early
1970s, into today, gas should be at around $4.50 or so, maybe
$4.75, assuming also constant taxation. So, while nobody likes
gas at $3.25 or what is about $2.50 in my neck of the woods right
now, we'd all like it a whole lot less at $4.75. And, that, BTW,
pretty much squashes the conspiracy theories about Big Oil and
Big Government conspiring with Big Car Companies to screw the
consumer.

Yes, and you are repetitive beyond all reason. How many times do
you have to whine the same song? Maybe some cheese with your whine
might improve your disposition.

See my previous post in this thread.

I did, and was nauseated.

Prune your posts of all the excess fat.

Methinketh I'll prune myself of you, it seems I am in the minority
here and still attemting to talk politely and rationally with you,
largely in agreement, until you turned on me. So, don't like my
verbose posts, exercise your killfile freedoms and put me out-of-my

you insist, at least 4 gig.

Garbanza! Well there you go.

I stated the same number yesterday -- FOUR Gigs for ME -- Room For Growth &
Expansion. Cybernetic Requirements & Needs Are NOT STATIC.

But not for the "average potted plant user" -- who will hopefully [so the
hardware makers hope] get a new box in two years -- because he has
underestimated his RAM needs.

Buy the BEST and KEEP it for awhile. That's the ticket.

I never said he did anything OUTRAGEOUS -- he's just
pedestrian.

strongly against you.

You don't strike me as a HERD ANIMAL, Jerry. But ARE you? I'd be very

Elegant Interface

I have a supped up F-150. The wife has a Nitro R/T.

F-150 SCrew:
I tightened up the suspension
Chipped
New "real" cold air intake
Headers
Dual in / Dual out exhaust
Larger TB - big mistake on the 150!
Supercharged
Upgraded power coils/coil packs
Upgraded ignition system
Removed the mechanical fan and replaced with electric
Upped the gear ratio

I know nothing of BMW's, other then the symbol So I don't know what it

Nope, hardly a herd animal, neither lead nor follow. I recognize
people for what they contibute to me or the greater good in any NG
I comment in, and in their demeanor. I also start off with respect
for people, and expand that positively and immediately if they are
true blue and treat me with respect. For that, I am NOT a herd
animal, as too many on Usenet like to show how smart they are by
making others look stupid.

For somebody who banties about $10 words, you can't see a metaphor
here? No?, it should be immediately obvious and the proof is left
to the reader, to wit: below FAA minimums means too little CPU, too
little memory to fly, have to go on instruments, like a wall clock
to monitor speed of your work.

But, does yours have the obligatory chrome plated coffee cans on
redneck dual exhausts? Been looking at Nitros, the new Sebring,
and the little cousin of the Charger, the Avenger. Like them all.
Didn't know that Nitros, besides having unique sheet metal and
trim from the NEW Jeep Liberty, also have a 5" longer W/B for
added rear leg room.

I know nothing of BMW's, other then the symbol So I don't
know what it compared to.

The series, 3, 5, 7, refer to size, features, performance, and
price, and there are several numbers within a series, although
I'm no expert, I think the higher the number the
bigger/quicker/pricier it is. A standard 5.7L HEMI is about the
performance class of a 535, maybe a shade slower maybe a bit
quicker.

Gots ta ask ya, are you an aligned Mopar buyer, i.e.,
employee/retiree, supplier of the company, or just like the cars
and perhaps know people who can get you a good employee discount?
Would like to know the good, the bad, and the ugly in your likes,
dislikes, successes, failures, etc. I'm guesing you've had good
luck on both the qualitative and quantitative measures of a
"good" vehicle, so I always ask what people's criteria are and
how they came to be largely a Mopar owner. It's been said that
brand loyalty in the U.S. is an obsolete concept, as people buy
what catches their fancy, has real or perceived superlatie
quality, and is overall not only exiting but has good value. This
last usually means reasonable price, but can also get into mpg,
ability to exceed your expectations, etc.

I would think so. The EPA pretty much forces recylability on
things like that, although older TVs and most, maybe all computer
equipment is still verboten because if the metals used and toxic
material inside components, which is mainly smoke, the kind
where, when it blow up billowing smoke, someone says "where was
all that smoke before? grin

But, increasingly expensive landfill space and necessary
segration of garbage according to its rate of decay and toxicity
is being a real problem in most regions. In my state, the
Canadians cut a deal decades ago with then Gov. John Engler to
dump their garbage in our fills, smart guys them. We've finally
gotten them to at least give us a timetable - runs into 2013 or
so - to stop the dumping and to certify the contents and makeup
on the trucks coming over the Detroit River.
