Default SP 3 Reassigned my External's Drive Letter

Can you please list all drives and partitions and put a description
against each. Distinguish between hard, DVD and removable drives. Do not
forget flash drives. Also say whether the system is dual or multiple
booting.

It is difficult to advise without answers to questions.

Have you checked Event Viewer for errors?

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer.Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

You should alway clean up after major changes. Running a Defragmenter
without cleaning up is a waste of time as it is only a second ( or
later ) housekeeping stage!

You are complaining that your system is sluggish. Have you checked
Event Viewer for errors?

An alternative to Disk CleanUp is cCleaner (freeware) which does a
more thorough job than Disk CleanUp. Disk CleanUp has to be run for
each user profile, whereas cCleaner only needs to be run once.

With any cleaner you need to proceed with caution. To be safe you
should create a restore point before using cCleaner. cCleaner also
offers backup before removal.

When using cCleaner think twice before checking Autocomplete Form
History under Internet Explorer. You do get a warning but this one
has irritating consequences. You may need to restore your system's
recollection of passwords after use so keep a record off computer
so that they can easily be re-entered.

Leave the Scan for Issues option alone.

cCleaner does not remove restore points. You need to use Disk
CleanUp for this. Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System
Tools, Disk CleanUp, More Options, System Restore and remove all
but the latest System Restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.

Say which drives are recognised in the BIOS and which in Disk
Management. Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer
Management, Disk Management.

Did you install any other hardware or repartition a drive?
Otherwise you may have a corrupt partition table.

Try using Disk Manager. E.g. Run... (press Win-R and
enter

diskmgmt.msc

for more clues (and possible help.)



I know this should be the largest problem anyone ever has
with their computer, but I'm really not thrilled about
reinstalling all my files (over 10 GBs) back into iTunes
when they're in the order I like them in now (I can hear you
laughing), and I am not too sure I like the way my computer
is reacting to SP3.

BTW although you may see WU as the cause of your problem
symptoms it would be more appropriate to look for help
resolving them in a newsgroup
which specializes in your OS. Cross-posting to an XP NG for
convenience.

These go on and on and on.

I did start, after doing a check disk on my F drive this morning and asking
it to fix the bad sectors, getting those error messages like crazy again, so
I just turned off my external and the computer seemed to be working well.
Seems as though the external is what is causing this, like my computer is
trying to write info from the main C drive to the external without my
requesting it to.

This is what I have on my computer. I have my main C drive, which is my
hard drive of course. I have a D drive which is a CD/DVD drive. My E drive
is a CD/RW drive. I have my trouble F drive which is an external, the
newest, a 250 GB one. I also have another external which I don't keep
running so I don't know anymore what label that is. Since I got the new one,
I keep it off and storing info for safe keeping. I have a G drive which is a
flash drive but it's not always in. I do have a USB extender which I have
plugged in at the moment with an iPod plug in (not connected to the iPod) and
I use an USB Hasp key for software for my profession which is alternated
between my desktop and my laptop. I don't know what you mean by dual and
multiple booting.

I don't know what else to think except I corrupted my external while doing
the upgrade with it running. At least I THINK it was running. Hopefully
it's just the external because I can get a new one or reformat it, but if
it's the C drive, that's a bigger problem. I just feel since when the F
drive is off and the computer works fine, it has to be the F drive.

I'm curious to see what you have to say after seeing 1/3 of my events log.

I'm sorry, Addison, if I'm not as knowledgeable as you. I don't know what is
important and was just trying to provide what Gerry asked me to provide. Do
you have an educated comment to make? Otherwise, you seem to be making a
rude
and totally uncalled for wisecrack when all I'm trying to do is get some
help here. I didn't know this was a forum for comedians with no audience.
When someone is reaching out for assistance and is trying to comply with
requests from people who ARE trying to help them, I find this totally
distasteful and just plain rude. If I misread what you're writing, my

Please post a single copy of the Error Report using this method.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer.Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

This error seems to be a consequence of Event ID: 51 and Event ID: 57.

Do the problems if you remove all other USB devices and reconnect the
external drive. If no problems add another USB device and observe
whether the problems restart.

Are any devices malfunctioning? Select Start, All Programs, Accessories,
System Tools, System Information. Open Components under System Summary
and click on Problem Devices. Is anything listed there?

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware, Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

These go on and on and on.

I did start, after doing a check disk on my F drive this morning and
asking it to fix the bad sectors, getting those error messages like
crazy again, so I just turned off my external and the computer seemed
to be working well. Seems as though the external is what is causing
this, like my computer is trying to write info from the main C drive
to the external without my requesting it to.

This is what I have on my computer. I have my main C drive, which is
my hard drive of course. I have a D drive which is a CD/DVD drive.
My E drive is a CD/RW drive. I have my trouble F drive which is an
external, the newest, a 250 GB one. I also have another external
which I don't keep running so I don't know anymore what label that
is. Since I got the new one, I keep it off and storing info for safe
keeping. I have a G drive which is a flash drive but it's not always
in. I do have a USB extender which I have plugged in at the moment
with an iPod plug in (not connected to the iPod) and I use an USB
Hasp key for software for my profession which is alternated between
my desktop and my laptop. I don't know what you mean by dual and
multiple booting.

I don't know what else to think except I corrupted my external while
doing the upgrade with it running. At least I THINK it was running.
Hopefully it's just the external because I can get a new one or
reformat it, but if it's the C drive, that's a bigger problem. I
just feel since when the F drive is off and the computer works fine,
it has to be the F drive.

I'm curious to see what you have to say after seeing 1/3 of my events

Default SP 3 Reassigned my External's Drive Letter

Here's the problem. It isn't happening all the time. I turned back on the
external before and now so far, there are no errors. I did check the Device
Manager and everything is fine there. My friend tends to believe it's my
computer and not the external. He is suggesting I take the external and
attach it to my laptop and then do a scan and see if any errors show up. He
said that way I'd know if it's the external or the computer.

I am going to take a look at your links to Event/Error 51 and see what that
is all about. Once again, I sincerely appreciate your staying with me on
this one. I still was wondering what someone meant when they said it's akin
to a cardinal sin to upgrade to SP3 with the external running. What kind of
problems can that create? Is it like this, where it seems the computer is
trying to randomly write data to the external drive when not requested and
it's failing?

Please post a single copy of the Error Report using this method.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer.Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

This error seems to be a consequence of Event ID: 51 and Event ID: 57.

Do the problems if you remove all other USB devices and reconnect the
external drive. If no problems add another USB device and observe
whether the problems restart.

Are any devices malfunctioning? Select Start, All Programs, Accessories,
System Tools, System Information. Open Components under System Summary
and click on Problem Devices. Is anything listed there?

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware, Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?
