Default auto-logon immediately logs out

i'm running xp home sp2. i'm using autoadminlogon to logon. a couple weeks
ago, i booted up and while logging on, after the "applying settings" message
came up but before the desktop appeared, the system automatically logged
out. it then logged back in again and the cycle repeated. ctrl-alt-del had
no effect. all i could do was hit the soft switch and the system shut down
gracefully. i then booted into safe mode. the same thing happened. i tried
safe mode with command prompt. same thing. i had to do a repair install from
the cd (which is a hassle because i don't have the sp2 cd - i have to go
through all the updates). this worked. today the same thing happened and i
had to repair it again the same way. in between occurances the system ran
fine and i rebooted several times with no problem. i can't trace this to
anything. any ideas? also, if i have to repair again this way, is there any
way to bypass the iterations of updates to sp1 that enable me to get sp2? i
had to run windows update from the web site three times before i could
finally get sp2 - is there a way to get it immediately after the repair
install? thanks for any help.

thanks for the info. i don't know why this reg value would all of sudden
become corrupted. i hadn't run adaware or any other spyware removal tool
recently. the value there now is correct (no surprise since the machine is
operating correctly now) but i'll check it before i reboot in the future.
