Default Confusion

I'm new to Win 8 and it's a nightmare for me
e.g. I have some stuff on a flash drive and can't find any way to get
it into the computer!

I tried to improve it with Classic Shell but after installation I
didn't see any change!

1. Start Windows Explorer (Winkey +E)

2. Browse to the flash drive

3 Copy and paste of drag to wherever.

I tried to improve it with Classic Shell but after
installation I didn't see any change!

If you are at the desktop, then you didn't do it (Classic Shell) right. If
you aren't at the desktop, go there.

Windows 8 user manual.

https://marketing.dell.com/Global/Fi...ws-8-ebook.pdf

Page 52 "Browsing the File Explorer"

"open the Start screen’s File Explorer tile.
The Start screen vanishes, and the Windows desktop appears,
with your files and folders listed in File Explorer."

*******

If you can find the Desktop tile, clicking that brings up
the desktop. I can see a couple targets on here.

http://i.i.cbsi.com/cnwk.1d/i/tim2/2....1_desktop.png

In the upper left hand corner, is a Trash Can. Clicking that
can give you access to file exploration. (I use this trick on
several different OSes - it's one thing they share in common - if
the file explorer is hidden, you can get there from the Trash Can.
I like to think of it, as "dumpster diving for files".)

Find the "Computer" item in the left hand pane (scrolling the pane
downwards if necessary), and clicking the "Computer" item should show all
storage devices.

In the above picture, near the bottom of the screen, second icon from
the left, is what looks like a file folder icon. I bet one of the icons
down there has something to do with the File Explorer...

Referring back to that Dell PDF manual, the figure

Figure 3-1: The File Explorer window displays your computer’s
storage areas.

shows what the File Explorer window looks like after you've
clicked "Computer". And in the example, they have a
"256MB Flash (K" showing. When you go to click on "256MB Flash (K",
try to stay on the left-hand-side of the icon.

*******

If you are in the Start window with all the tiles,
you can also type "diskmgmt.msc" to bring up
Disk Management. That has worked as an executable
in a number of OSes. It shows a view of storage
devices as well, but for the purposes of defining
partitions, formatting, adding a partition label
or a drive letter. That sort of thing. You don't
go there to view your files - this is for situations
where the USB key is completely empty, and you need
to format it. The graphical view in there, is more
convenient than other views you might use. In the
Windows world, USB keys generally only have the
one partition. If multiple partitions were present,
Windows has a habit of ignoring the others. I've brought
over Linux flash keys with multiple partitions, and
only one partition is a candidate for mounting in
Windows. The others get ignored, even if all of
them were FAT32.

Try plugging the flash drive into a USB socket.

Ed

Ha Ha! Wish I'sd thought of that!

I am not a computrer idiot --- in fact I've
used both corporate and personal
computers when the were first available
even before floppy disks existed.
And I've programmed stuff for
a lot of them!

Because it can show you what to do. It's like googling for an
answer on google. There is a lot of imformation about OS,
applications and hardware on how to use them and set them up.

I thought Google was my friend. How many friends does a person need?

If Google and YouTube are my friends, how come neither one of them helped me
mow the lawn and paint my house? I thought that's what friends were for ;-)

BTW with Classic Shell you have to select mode.

Once installed, I was asked for a choice of shell. Answered that

The primary thing to master with Win8 is how to get to the desktop. Once
you've conquered that peak it's downhill for the rest. And once you've
got the damn thing to boot into the desktop, well, that's Everest conquered.

Ed

Getting to the desk top is trivial ( as is getting rid of much of the
garbage ( all kinds of stuff HP put on and maybe some from MS) off off
the "normal" screen was trivial enough but to boot there --- that I
don't know about.
But, I'm a nuisance here to you pros so I'll move along.
