When will Windows 7 stop being supported by Microsoft? Windows 7 RTM is no longer supported; it lost supported status on 9 April 2013. Windows 7 with SP1 loses "mainstream" support (non-security-related bugfixes) as of 13 January 2015, and loses "extended support" (security bugfixes) on 14 January 2020. After the end of extended support users can buy (for $BIGBUCKS) additional support contracts. Since this is a Windows 8 newsgroup, I'll add that the corresponding dates for the end of support for Windows 8 are 9 January 2018 for mainstream support and 10 January 2023 for extended support. Note that each of the above dates is a Patch Tuesday, as is the XP cutoff date 8 April 2014. K, seven more years and then it'll probably do an XP and get extended some more. Seven years should be enough for MS to get Windows 9 right after the Me, Vista and 8 fiasco. A bit less than 7 yrs. Look at those dates closer Mainstream support - about 1 more years Extended support - about 6 years. Extending the lifecycle of XP was an old-guard decision. None of that regime remain and with o/s now being being released as updates and full versions for prior o/s (no upgrades) the need to extend a lifecycle for any o/s would be a foolish business decision. By 2015, it's more likely at least one or two more versions of 8 and/or 9 will be available all following the same pattern of update/full version. By 2020 it could easily be Windows 10, 11 or 12. One thing may be certain...anyone waiting for 9 or later 'getting it right' is waiting for increased cloud integration and dependence and possibly subscription based o/s. -- -- ....winston misfit mvp consumer apps |
