Call from MS today!

... Popkin posted this via : The nice Asian gentleman, John Lewis, told me my computer was downloading malicious code. I told him he was FOS and to FO. Here's what happens : a very personable Asian or Mid-Eastern or Indian lady or gentleman calls on the telephone - the Caller-ID number is spoofed - and when I answer "Hello..." they say "Hello, how are you doing? I'm calling about your Windows computer..." I respond "I don't think my windows have computers, they are the manual kind." They are obviously off-their-programmed message sheet, and repeat, "No, I am calling about YOUR COMPUTER, your *Windows* COMPUTER." I say "What!?! Me!?! HOORAY! Have I won a computer?" Then I direct my voice away from the telephone and shout "Hey baby, we just won a computer! Do you know how to drive a computer?" They say "NO! I am calling YOU about YOUR [Windows] computer." I say "Well, I really don't need any computers for my windows because of the climate here. I keep them closed all the time and run air-conditioning or heat. Do you have computers for my air-conditioner?" By this time they usually just go blank, like they have me on hold to ask their supervisors for assistance... I then say "Hello... Hello... Don't you need my address so you know where to send my computer?" I wait for a few seconds, then hang up. They never call me back... I guess I'm never gonna get those computers I keep winning. Whaaaaa... Makes me a little bit sad, but who needs new fangled computers anyway? HTH. Fun. I thought if you really ****ed them off you would be put on the Global and continuous scam caller list. Anyways, very good. The last one that called me weeks ago told me something about my Windows doing something, so I asked him if he had Windows. He said Yes, and then I said "Open one up and jump out of it". -- Buffalo |

It's been great! Now that I think about it, it was in a post by you that I learned about nomorobo. Thanks, For years I used PhoneTray - the free version. It is very flexible and can be used to either whitelist or blacklist numbers. You can also download or record your own .WAV files to play... Essentially, you can key a separate ..WAV file to each number you have listed. I used it to block every number that I had not specifically whitelisted. After a while I quit using the cutsie .WAV files which I had targeted to specific numbers - and/or ranges of numbers - using instead the default dead-air no-sound disconnect. This tended to eliminate the particularly tenacious players who were bound and determined to harass me into buying their service/product, etc., but were incentivized to keep calling back because my specific messages let them know that the line was an active telephone number. After a while, most of the nonsense calls subsided. Since PhoneTray generates it's own incoming call log, if I missed a number which I wanted to allow, I could simply add it to the whitelist and call back the folks explaining that they would no longer have any trouble getting through to me at that number... Here's the contingencies : You have to have a 56k voice modem and you have to have your computer running 24/7/365. You essentially loop your landline through the computer to your telephone configuration. The software examines the incoming Caller ID, and if it's not whitelisted, it zaps the call by disconnecting it. If it is whitelisted, it simply allows the incoming call to proceed to your telephone equipement. It logs all incoming calls and their disposition. A couple of things happened along the way. I was using WinXP-Pro-SP3 as an admin machine on my LAN, thereby leaving it running [nearly] all the time. Also, PhoneTray went to a $pay$ version which better accommodated the newer versions of Windows coming out. You could - and still can - readily download the last free version, v1.39... but I also upgraded my Win8.1 box to Windows 10, and since this bugger is soooooo fassssst at EVERYTHING, I only boot it for a session, then I shut down until I need it again. That essentially obviated the practicality of using PhoneTray, plus this newer 64-bit Windows box does NOT have a 56k modem... I could make it work by using a USB data/FAX modem which is compatible with PhoneTray, but after years of using it on my WinXP box, my unwanted telephone calls have receded so much that I barely get any junk calls anymore. Whoaaaa.... went long... essentially PhoneTray Free (v1.39) is a good tool for many to help control their phone call situation. The $pay$ware is probably worth the money as well, but in my case, the free version had everything I needed. -- I AM Bucky Breeder, (*(^; "Give me ambiguity or give me something else!" -- Somebody, some time ago .... and I approve this message! |

He immediately hung up, but I did get a laugh out of it. |

Unfortunately, I got no further than seeing that US-based wireless carriers are not currently supported. I do have a VoIP-based home phone but only use it for outbound calls now and then, so the ringer is turned off. My cell phone is my primary phone, and Nomorobo doesn't work with that. |

Sadly, (if by game you're referring to some dependency on Microsoft Windows) there's still an element of truth in that statement. However, my dependency is now somewhat watered down to running win2k and winXP VMs specifically to run MpegStreamClip to process the mt2 files being created by Kaffeine running in the host OS (oh and enjoying a decent game of Solitaire when I have a few minutes to kill whilst waiting on a process to complete :-) I monitor this group to remind me that my change to Linux Mint wasn't *really* such a dumb idea after all. -- Johnny B Good |

Obviously, this is an insult to your intellectual ability but it is better than calling them names. Clearly, some people can't handle nuisance calls which are part of our lives in the 21st century now that snail mail is almost declined because of the cost!! -- 1. /*This post contains rich text (HTML). if you don't like it then you can kill-filter the poster without crying like a small baby.*/ 2. /*This message is best read in Mozilla Thunderbird as it uses 21st century technology.*/ |
